Four Seasons Resort Nevis and Sea Turtle Conservancy Celebrate 11th Annual Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend, July 14-17, 2017

May 4, 2017,
Nevis, West Indies

Each year, from June through October, the beaches of Nevis come alive with the scurrying of one of nature's most beloved creatures, the sea turtle. Celebrating the 11th Annual Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend, Four Seasons Resort Nevis, Sea Turtle Conservancy and Nevis Turtle Group are continuing their partnership to educate and create awareness about the protection of these majestic sea creatures. From July 14 to 17, 2017, visitors to the Resort along with Nevisian residents can take part in the annual turtle release ceremonies and watch as the sea turtles make their journey back to the Caribbean Sea.

Each year the program helps researchers study the migration patterns of endangered sea turtles that nest on Nevis’ beaches. Four Seasons Resort Nevis sponsors two GPS satellite transmitters annually to help the Sea Turtle Conservancy track the migration patterns of sea turtles that return to Nevis to lay their eggs. Guests will help spot nesting sea turtles under the guidance of the local Nevis Turtle Group, which keeps a close watch on turtle activities and protects nesting sites throughout the season. Once a sea turtle is found and finishes nesting, the volunteer group will bring the turtle back to the Resort, where it will be fitted with a satellite transmitter and released into the sea the following morning.

Nineteen hawksbill turtles have been released since the start of the program in 2006. The most recent hawksbills from Nevis were named Sylvia and Sundrop, and released in July 2016. Following the culmination of each annual Sea Turtle Weekend, guests are able to follow the progress of the sea turtles as they travel around the region from Nevis.

“Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend is such an important event here on Nevis, and for the Caribbean as a whole,” says Ed Gannon, General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Nevis. “Along with Sea Turtle Conservancy and Nevis Turtle Group, we continue to educate visitors and locals about our sea turtles, in effort to ensure that future generations get to see these beautiful animals in their natural habitat for generations to come.”

Three species of sea turtles nest on the shores of Nevis: the hawksbill, the leatherback and the green turtle. These turtles journey hundreds of miles each nesting season to return to the same place where they were hatched. Under the glow of the moonlight, they lay the eggs of what will be the next generation of sea turtles that will one day make the same journey. With as few as one in 1,000 baby sea turtles surviving to adulthood, sea turtle conservation and tracking is essential to protecting these animals.

The celebrate this year’s Sea Turtle Conservation Weekend, the Resort is offering the Live Large & Prosper promotion, providing 40 percent savings on villa stays of three nights or more, as well as the Advance Purchase promotion, for 30 percent savings on rooms and suites booked at least 60 days in advance.
