Ask Christopher Rudolph if you want to know how far South Africa has come. Although born in Lausanne, Switzerland, he grew up in Johannesburg during the waning days of apartheid. His pregnant mother had to leave South Africa when he was just eight-years-old after she had began a relationship with a black South African – a union considered illegal by the pernicious race laws of the time. Rudolph joined his mother and his new stepfather back in Lausanne after completing high school. Just over two decades later, he’s delighted to be back in the city of his childhood, marvelling at the transformation that has been wrought since he left.

“Once the epicentre of division and prejudice, this modern city is building a vibrant future which embraces diversity,” he says. “I’m passionate about managing a hotel that reflects this profound, creative shift. Any hotelier worldwide has a story to tell with his property and the people working there, and this hotel is no exception. South Africa is remarkably multi-ethnic, with 11 official languages. Four Seasons has recruited talented ambassadors to represent the international stature the country has achieved.”

Rudolph’s studies at the prestigious Lausanne Hotel School prepared the foundations for a career that has taken him to a host of top hotels and resorts in locations all over the world – from Pebble Beach, California, to Egypt’s El Gouna, on the edge of the Red Sea. After serving as executive assistant manager at Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin, he joined the newly renovated Grand Hotel du Lac in Vevey, Switzerland, in 2006. He served as the general manager of this Relais & Châteaux property until joining Four Seasons in 2013.
