“One of the keys to success in the hotel industry is being able to adapt to different environments and cultures,” notes Jean Claude Wietzel, general manager of Four Seasons Resort Marrakech, who is currently on the sixth continent and eighth culture of his career. “No one does it alone in this business, and the only way to ensure the help of others is with understanding and respect for the country around you.”

Since arriving in the “Red City” in September 2010, Wietzel has been busy polishing up the ambience of the Resort and Spa – a light, contemporary feel not found at most Marrakech addresses. His emphasis has been on providing highly personalised service as part of an authentic Moroccan experience in elegant surroundings.

Born in Nice, France, Wietzel grew up above a bakery owned by his parents – two bon vivants who exposed him not only to the fragrances of oven-fresh bread but to the joys of good food, nice wine and frequent travel. “Hotel work came naturally to me, especially within the Four Seasons culture: I’d been raised to value respect, humility and care.”

An accomplished musician, Wietzel spent seven years studying piano at the Nice Music Conservatory. He still tickles the ivories whenever he can between work and family commitments. “I find it very relaxing,” he says. “It takes me into a world of my own, and I’m able to forget about everything else.”

He is also a keen sportsman who enjoys golf, tennis, running, volleyball, football, skiing, windsurfing and, most recently, scuba diving in the Red Sea at Four Seasons Sharm El Sheikh. The limited breathing room he has at his current posting, he’s used to explore outdoor pursuits in Marrakech and beyond: “The sunny weather has definitely encouraged me to get outside and work up a sweat, whatever the sport.”

For now, he’s enjoying being part of the launch of a new Resort. “Marrakech has everything a traveller could desire – beautiful scenery, rich culture, excellent food and warm people. The only thing it hasn’t had is a Four Seasons – until now.”
