Christmas in Prague
Prague may well be the most magical city in the world at Christmas time. City squares are transformed into festive markets with seasonal shops, performances by local and international choirs, students dancing in traditional Czech costume, and plenty of mulled wine to keep everyone warm. In the Old Town Square, a giant tree and its nativity scene are the centre of attention.
Another stop is Wenceslas Square, named for the patron saint of Bohemia and inspiration for the famous Christmas carol. Best buys at the markets include handmade ornaments, glassware (Prague is famous for its glass artisans), ceramic beer mugs and wooden toys. Live carp are sold out of tubs on the street in anticipation of a traditional Central European holiday feast.
To celebrate the season,
