Coming from the Windy City with its soaring, iconic architecture and flat topography, Four Seasons Hotel Seattle General Manager Michael Pedder enjoys exploring the wonderfully diverse Emerald City.
Pedder is no stranger to different landscapes and cultures, having spent more than 14 years with Four Seasons, from Austin and Los Angeles to Lanai and Philadelphia.
Pedder’s love for the world of hospitality began at a young age, having spent summers working at his father’s hotel in Liverpool, England, where he was born and raised. He studied hospitality management before moving to the United States in 1998 to work in historic Newport, Rhode Island as the general manager of The Vanderbilt Grace. “Then it was Vanderbilt Hall. It’s in a fantastic part of the world.”
His Four Seasons career began in food and beverage, holding various management positions within the department before rising to Director of Food and Beverage. While in Los Angeles, one of his significant accomplishments was overseeing the successful opening of the Hotel's restaurant, Culina, Modern Italian, a standard by which new hotel restaurants looked to.
“At Four Seasons, it’s so exciting to come to work where the drive to always be better is there. I find inspiration in the world and people around me,” shares Pedder.
At Four Seasons Hotel Seattle, Pedder’s previous experience in both city and resort properties is valuable and he leads the only Forbes Travel Guide Five Star property in Washington State, known for its resort-within-a-city vibe and its central location to Pike Place Market and the waterfront.
“I’ve been immersing myself in the culture of the Pacific Northwest, and looking at ways of enhancing the wonderfully natural service of our employees,” added Pedder. “This is such a warm, beautiful and genuine hotel.”
While he is miles away from his homeland, a few things remain close to heart. As an avid sports fan he cheers on Liverpool Football Club (albeit from afar) and the English idiom “don’t judge a book by its cover” is an important lesson he’s kept throughout his career.
And for those just entering hospitality themselves, perhaps a young Michael just starting out, he says, “be the best you can be in the job you're in and promotions will come.”
His wife, Stephanie, and his two young boys “keep me balanced.” When not with his family, you might catch him enjoying a round of golf or riding his Ducati motorcycle through the city.
