Four Seasons Hotel Sydney
199 George Street, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia

Four Seasons Hotel Sydney Gets a New Look and Goes Green. The Hotel’s recent renovation allowed it to update its looks and improve its environmental practices.

Defying the saying that beauty is skin deep, the recently completed refurbishment of Four Seasons Hotel Sydney’s 531 guest rooms and suites not only resulted in contemporary new interiors for the Hotel but also allowed Four Seasons to dig deeper and implement a series of effective waste-reduction and water- and energy-saving systems – allowing guests to rest easy in the Hotel’s sleek new aesthetic.

Stephen Lewis, general manager of Four Seasons Hotel Sydney says, “The recent refurbishment of the Hotel’s rooms and suites presented us with the opportunity to align the visual aesthetic with our commitment to improving environmental practices. While we are challenged with the constraints of a 26-year-old building and the expectations of a high-end establishment, we realised many opportunities to improve practices and responsibly minimise our environmental footprint without impacting on our guest’s experiences.”

Joseph Pang Design Consultants spearheaded the $16 million facelift of the guest rooms, layering richly textured fabrics and wall coverings using an alternating palette of celadon and bronze hues. The furnishings are an eclectic mix of contemporary pieces mixed with classic fixtures. The overall result exudes a residential sentiment, with the added advantage of the rooms’ and suites’ panoramic views of Sydney Harbour.

Waking in such plush surroundings, guests of the Hotel can rest easy that beneath the sleek new look is a well-devised system of waste-reduction and energy- and water-saving implementations, carefully chosen for their quality and ability to minimise environmental impact. Platypus Gem-Flo systems were installed in all guest rooms. These systems achieve constant water pressure while regulating water flow rates, resulting in large volumes of water being saved. The Hotel has also installed a new PowerPax train chiller in the main plant room that, combined with the new cooling towers, uses 30% less energy to cool the building.

Following an extensive waste audit, Four Seasons implemented a recycling program that includes guest rooms. The program recycles glass, aluminium, paper, plastic batteries and used lamps. Discarded linens and towels are recycled as rags within the Hotel or are donated to local charities.

While the new furnishings and environmental improvements reflect innovation, the Hotel remains traditional in its approach to maintaining the new fixtures. One of the few hotels to continue to honour the tradition of having in-house skilled tradespeople, Four Seasons has an extensive and rare full-time engineering team that consists of a French polisher, a carpenter, an electrician, a painter and others. In a time when most hotels outsource such skills, Four Seasons chooses to maintain quality from within. The extensive engineering team maintains the Hotel in keeping with the environmental audit’s recommendations on a daily basis.

Since opening its doors as the Regent Hotel in 1983, the now Four Seasons Hotel Sydney has continually reinvigorated itself over its colourful 26-year history. These latest aesthetic and environmental enhancements are synonymous with its commitment to innovate and improve on the guest experience.
