Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora, named one of Elite Traveler’s Top 100 Hotels, celebrates the month-long festival of Heiva I Bora Bora, from June 28 – July 16, 2019.

Taking place on the main square of Vaitape at Place Tu Vavau, Heiva I Bora Bora is the annual festival of song and dance also known as “The Celebration of Life.” Guests of Four Seasons are invited to experience the Island’s most famous cultural gathering with a specially curated program.

Four Seasons guests may join the celebrations and board the Resort’s catamaran for the ride to Vaitape. On-board, they will meet a Polynesian Heiva Ambassador and Resort Concierge, who will accompany them to the festival. Welcome cocktails in coconuts along with sweet treats will be served, as traditional ukulele music is played. Once at Place Tu Vavau, guests will be given locally-made cushions to place on their seats for extra comfort during the performances. The Concierge will provide bespoke guidance and recommendations throughout Heiva, allowing guests to experience the sights, sounds and flavours in the way they most desire. Additionally, guests may enjoy a number of Resort-guided Polynesian classes throughout Heiva, such as flower crown and pareo making, legend telling and stargazing. The Heiva Discovery Package experience is available to guests of Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora through the Concierge desk, and is priced at XPF 10,500 each.

"We love sharing the beauty and tradition of Heiva I Bora Bora with our guests,” says Maria Jagla, General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Bora Bora. “The colour, energy and magic of this celebration is a genuine one, filled with important stories told through song and dance.”

About Heiva

The Tahitian word Heiva (hei meaning to assemble, and va meaning community places) is known for its soul-stirring music, dancing, singing and sporting events that highlight the beauty and culture of the Polynesian people of French Polynesia. More than just a celebration of life, Heiva has become the symbol of the Polynesian tradition that was once almost completely lost. The competitions of Heiva highlight ancestral traditions and legends. The participants are judged by a group of experts who specialise in dance, traditional percussions and musical compositions, singing and lyrics. Live music accompanies the singers and dancers throughout the competition. The orchestras are made up of musicians using traditional instruments such as the nasal flute or vivo, made from a portion of bamboo, marine shells or pu, and more recently, the ukulele. Traditional singing adds a powerful portion to the Heiva music, and the melodies include a cappella in reo ma’ohi (Polynesian language), which express moments of joy and melancholy.
