Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor Leads Sustainable Tourism as the Only Hotel in the Balearic Islands Recognized with LEED Gold Certification

The LEED certificate (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is a voluntary certification system for sustainable buildings. Developed by the US Green Building Council, it evaluates various criteria, including energy efficiency, sustainable materials, water use, and indoor environmental quality, among others. Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor has gone one step further by achieving LEED Gold certification, which requires a score of 60 to 79 points on the LEED rating system, making it the first and only property with this certification in the Balearic Islands.
The resort’s sustainable character dates back to the 1920s, when Adan Diehl, founder of Formentor, already championed an ecological vision of tourism based on respect for nature and the environment.
Today, Four Seasons continues that legacy with concrete actions that have been decisive in obtaining the LEED Gold certification. Some of these initiatives include reducing water consumption through rainwater harvesting and the use of greywater for irrigation; harnessing renewable energy through photovoltaic solar systems and next-generation battery technology; implementing heat recovery as well as thermal and acoustic insulation to optimize energy use; food waste management and the use of electric vehicles; and the reforestation of native vegetation along with the active protection of nature and forests.
These measures reflect Four Seasons philosophy of integrating luxury with sustainability, promoting ecological tourism and preserving nature while providing an exceptional experience for its guests.
