New Art Collection at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea
Introducing contemporary Hawaiian art into newly designed guest rooms and suites
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is a work of art - literally. Long celebrated for its integration of curated fine Hawaiian-inspired art pieces -- everything from the impressive Kaneko heads that welcome guests at the lobby entrance to the hundreds of original works found throughout the luxury Resort, Four Seasons Resort Maui is again pushing the boundaries this fall by letting contemporary Hawaiian art take centre stage.
The debut of an entirely new collection of commissioned artwork to enhance the luxury Resort’s redesigned interiors of all 383 guest rooms and suites kicks off in October 2016. Offering the largest guest rooms on Maui, the space has been re-imagined to offer all the amenities of a modern personal sanctuary while honouring the beauty and magic of the Wailea coastline. The thoughtful design features flexible options for relaxing, dining and working in rooms that use sophisticated simplicity as the hallmark of luxury. The eye-catching original art in the rooms and spacious bathrooms contribute to the contemporary design.
“The new in-room art represents a seamless thread of continuity and inspiration from the Resort’s existing authentic Hawaiian art collection of more than 200 individual pieces that are showcased in public spaces and constitute Maui’s only 24/7 art gallery,” says Julie Cline, the Santa Barbara, California-based art curator responsible for both the original collection, which debuted in 2007, and this new body of work.
Cline says she has sought to create a “living” Maui art experience that goes beyond the guest rooms and suites. She explains that in addition to the guest rooms and suites, there are also “sanctuaries” throughout the Resort grounds that offer breathtaking natural vistas. One particular suite garden features pieces of natural driftwood sculpture fashioned into perfect spheres, entitled The Orbs. These wooden sculptures capture the imagination. She refers to this new collection as “Art Basel Maui,” a nod to the art world’s celebrated exhibition because of its edgy and fresh themes.

Artist George Woollard says of his Tribute to Renoir, “I am looking for a visionary quality that pays homage to the great art of the past but also reflects my own life and time.” Other prominent art pieces in the new collection are Light Catch and Arabesque by Carol Bennett, which feature underwater paintings of female swimmers in bold colours; Monday Morning by Janetta Knapp and Throw Net by Abby Romanchak.

The large and gracious Maile and Lokelani Presidential Suites include pieces such as Red Suit by Carol Bennett, and the Big and Little Orbs on Lava Stone Plinth by Hawaiian-based artist Claudia Johnson.
Like traditional museums, Four Seasons Resort Maui also offers a self-guided iPod tour of the Resort’s curated art collection available to guests and visitors alike. And the Resort extends its art outreach for guests by offering the Artist Showcase daily from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm where selected local artisans have an opportunity to showcase an array of media for viewing enjoyment and purchase.
