Discover Better Sleep at Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort

Luxury wellness retreat launches new sleep session
July 24, 2024,
Hawaii, Lanai (Sensei), U.S.A.

Why not use that next tropical vacation to also improve sleep quality?  At the adults-only Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort, guests can select the new stand-alone Sleep 1:1 guided session during a stay or choose the five-night Rest and Recovery Program for a deeper dive into restoring balance in the mind and body and developing a framework for managing stress in everyday life.

While a relaxing vacation often lends itself to uninterrupted sleep, sleepless nights may await upon the holiday’s end.  At Sensei Lanai, experience a multi-pronged approach from guest room to sessions and activities to aid in promoting better sleep hygiene.

One’s environment (both internal and external) might be one of the most directly impactful components of sleep, and guests can trial new techniques. In the bedroom, learn about sleep supportive cues, for example, light switch settings that allow for neuro-ocular modulation, signalling an upcoming bedtime to the brain. Guests can also check the daily calendar for movement classes early in the day that then signal a sleep response later or meditation to find deep relaxation as the day comes to a close.

Best-in-class Sensei Guides and practitioners also help guests improve sleep and reduce stress during personalized wellness sessions designed to develop practices that can be explored, then continued, once home. Sessions are centred on each individual guest, and the team often uses data to assist in that process, whether through wearables or anecdotal lifestyle insights. Healthy sleep is a result of integrated and informed choices throughout the day, in step with Sensei’s philosophy of “Move Nourish, Rest.”  A Sleep 1:1 private session is a chance to review daily routines and behaviours to improve overall sleep quality, whether that involves wind down techniques for the evening or optimizing one’s sleep environment (minimizing distractions, lighting, temperature, and more).

The new session is structured through a thoughtful composition of evidence-based techniques for behaviour change and personal contemplation.  A review of the guest's experience, data, and wellness intentions kick off the session, then Mindset Guides apply their knowledge to provide resources to change sleep for the better.  Sensei’s Wellness Science division uses 85 peer-reviewed research articles and publications to inform in-depth training.  From sleep behaviour and duration to circadian rhythms and disordered sleep to the impact of exercise, nutrition, caffeine, alcohol and stress, the team has distilled pertinent and high-quality research into evidence-based techniques that on-site Mindset Guides can personalize to each guest.

During the Rest and Recovery program, which includes a Sleep 1:1, guests work with the Sensei team over five days to analyse their current physical and mental state, learn stress management techniques and reframe their perceptions of their personal movement, nourishment and rest practices. Using historical and real-time data captured by a complimentary WHOOP 4.0 band delivered pre-arrival, each guest’s Sensei Guide will help interpret key biomarkers, including sleep stages/quality (Light, Deep, REM, and more), heart rate variability, and evening heart rate to inform their curated itinerary.

While each guest receives personalized tips there are consistent sleep themes raised, including optimal wake time; optimizing schedules and sleep environments; practices to fall asleep; sleep regimen, and the arc of the day for better sleep.

While research suggests habit formation is unique for individuals, approximately 20-30 days of daily practice is often recognized for seeing change.  Guests can book a My Progress virtual session with their Guide after their visit to evaluate and assess practices they have carried home, and the Rest & Recovery Program includes 2 virtual sessions within the package. For example, one guest reported a “profound change in restfulness both during sleep and through stressful times” by setting a regular wake-time and doing five minutes of breathing first thing every morning.  Another guest found a 10-minute journaling exercise each night delivered more high quality sleep, including less waking throughout the night.

For those just beginning to explore the topic, Dream On: Navigating the Challenges of Sleep is a 30-minute group session, part of the complimentary weekly class schedule.  Guests engage in a short questionnaire and open conversation about potential sleep obstacles from morning and evening routines to circadian rhythms, as well as various tools to improve the quality and quantity of sleep.

Couples seeking a relaxing end of day can book Evening Hale Time, where they can enjoy all the amenities of the spa hale including an infrared sauna, steam shower, ofuro bath, outdoor rain shower and soaking tub. Available 7:00 pm, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, it’s complete with gourmet refreshments and snacks.
