"The best part of traveling the world is discovering the places that call you back," says Konrad Gstrein, Regional Vice President and General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.
Growing up in an Austrian skiing destination, Gstrein was exposed to travel and tourism early in his life. After finishing his formal education, he began his career at a local tourism office in sales. "When the opportunity to join Four Seasons Resort Maui presented itself in 2001, this once-in-a-lifetime invitation was also one of the most intimidating," he says. "Leaving Austria to live on the opposite side of the globe was a huge leap of faith. But I jumped at the offer to work in paradise for one of the world's greatest hospitality brands."
Nearly 25 years later, Gstrein returns to where his Four Seasons story began. His career has taken him across the brand's most prestigious properties: Resort Manager at Maui in 2012, Hotel Manager at Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills in 2014, General Manager at Toronto in 2017, San Francisco in 2021, and most recently Regional Vice President and General Manager at Las Vegas in 2023.
"Maui holds a special place in my heart—it's where my journey with Four Seasons began, and where I learned what genuine aloha means," says Gstrein. "Returning to lead this remarkable property and team is both humbling and exciting. I'm eager to build on the resort's legacy while honoring the island's culture and natural beauty."
Gstrein's career has been defined by his ability to honour a property's heritage while boldly reimagining its future. On Maui, he's excited to work alongside a dedicated team in guiding the resort into its next chapter—building on decades of excellence while thoughtfully evolving to exceed the expectations of today's guests. "Great resorts don't reinvent themselves," he says. "They grow into the fullest expression of what they've always been."
Back on Maui, this time with husband Jason and yellow Labrador Cooper, Gstrein is eager to reconnect with the island that defined his hospitality philosophy. The family enjoys exploring hiking trails, beaches, and the natural beauty that makes Maui unique. "I grew up wanting to explore the world," he reflects. "What I've learned is that the best journeys often lead you back to the places that shaped you."
