At Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, the Wedding Aisle is a Boat Ride Away
An overwater Wedding Pavilion, a glass-floored aisle and a bridal salon in collaboration with Japanese wedding specialist Kelly An bring a little extra magic to saying "I do" in the Maldives.
Some journeys to the altar begin with a walk down the aisle. At Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, they begin with a boat ride across the Indian Ocean. Set just off the island’s north-eastern tip, the Resort’s overwater Wedding Pavilion offers an intimate setting for couples to exchange vows, surrounded by the turquoise waters of Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Here, the aisle is made of glass, tropical fish can sometimes be spotted swimming beneath the couple’s feet, and the only witnesses beyond their loved ones are the sea and sky.
Complementing this remarkable setting is the Resort’s dedicated Wedding Salon, created in collaboration with Japanese bridal specialist Kelly An. Designed to make destination weddings as effortless as they are memorable, the salon allows couples to select their wedding attire in Japan and find the very same pieces waiting for them upon arrival in the Maldives. With everything from bridal gowns and tuxedos to professional hair and make-up services thoughtfully arranged, the journey from wedding preparations to wedding vows becomes a pleasure in itself.
A Wedding Pavilion Suspended Above the Ocean
Accessible only by boat, the Wedding Pavilion has offered couples an extraordinary setting for intimate ceremonies since its opening in December 2015. Perched on pillars above the lagoon, the 45-square-metre (484-square- foot) pavilion features a soaring vaulted ceiling reaching six metres (19.7 feet) at its highest point. A glass aisle, originally designed above a turtle enclosure, runs through the pavilion’s titanium-polished concrete floor, offering glimpses of the marine world below. Floor-to-ceiling bi-fold glass doors on three sides open onto timber decking, inviting the ocean breeze inside and creating uninterrupted views of the surrounding waters. With space for the couple and up to 16 guests, the pavilion offers an intimate celebration in which the setting becomes part of the ceremony.
Every wedding is thoughtfully tailored with the assistance of the Resort’s dedicated wedding coordinator. From floral arrangements and candlelit details to flowing fabrics and personalised colour palettes, couples can create a celebration that reflects their individual style. The vivid blues of the lagoon provide a natural backdrop for daytime ceremonies, while sunset brings warmer hues of scarlet and gold to the occasion. And when the vows have been exchanged, there is no need to travel far for the honeymoon. The couple can simply return to the island to begin married life amid Landaa Giraavaru’s white-sand beaches, lush tropical gardens and tranquil ocean surroundings.
The Wedding Wardrobe, Without the Luggage
For couples planning a destination wedding, transporting wedding gowns, tuxedos and delicate accessories across international borders can be one of the less romantic aspects of the occasion. Landaa Giraavaru’s Wedding Salon takes that consideration out of the equation.
Introduced in December 2023 in collaboration with Japanese wedding specialist Kelly An, the service allows couples to select their wedding attire at participating Kelly An bridal boutiques in Japan, including Yokohama and Osaka, before travelling to the Maldives to find the same items awaiting them at the Resort. Fukuoka was also among the three original boutique locations when the collaboration launched.
The salon debuted with an extensive collection of bridal and formalwear available both in Japan and at Landaa Giraavaru, allowing couples to make their selections well before departure. The original bridal collection featured 50 gowns, ranging from timeless white and cream designs to more expressive shades of red, blue and orange. A curated selection of accessories, including tiaras, hairpieces, necklaces, earrings and shoes, completed the bridal wardrobe. For grooms, the collection included 30 tuxedos, complemented by white shirts and formal footwear. The result is a wonderfully practical arrangement: all the excitement of choosing the perfect wedding attire, without the worry of packing, transporting or preparing it after a long journey.
From Bridal Styling to the Finishing Touches
The Wedding Salon's opening also brought the expertise of Japanese wedding hair and make-up consultant Arisa Ueno to the island. With 19 years of professional experience at the time of the launch, including a decade working exclusively with Kelly An, Ueno brought an international perspective to bridal beauty. Her career has taken her to weddings across New Caledonia, New Zealand, Fiji, France, Italy, Greece and the Maldives, giving her an understanding of the artistry and practical considerations involved in destination celebrations.
For additional styling and pampering, the Resort is also home to a sea-view Rossano Ferretti salon, where the wedding party can enjoy professional hairstyling and hair treatments. Trained at the renowned Italian hairstylist’s academy, the salon team follows Ferretti’s signature approach to hairdressing, which works with the hair’s natural movement while considering each guest’s face shape, skin tone and personality. The technique reflects the philosophy of Ferretti, whose work has also reached television audiences through the discovery plus series HairStyle, The Talent Show. Together, the Resort’s bridal services offer a seamless transition from the excitement of wedding preparations to the quiet anticipation of walking down the aisle.
A Celebration That Begins Long Before “I Do”
At Landaa Giraavaru, the beauty of a destination wedding lies not only in the ceremony itself, but in the experience surrounding it. From choosing a gown in Japan to arriving at a secluded Maldivian island, from the final touches of hair and make-up to a private boat journey towards the wedding pavilion, each moment becomes part of the story. And with the honeymoon waiting just across the lagoon, the first chapter of married life can begin exactly where the vows were exchanged.
