Nestled just below Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, the Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve offers a peaceful retreat into nature, inviting exploration and discovery. This vibrant and diverse natural habitat is a cherished part of the Aviara community, providing an idyllic setting for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those simply seeking a moment of tranquillity. It’s also a favourite spot for local dog owners who love to walk their pets along the scenic trails.

With more than 600 acres (245 hectares) of coastal wetlands, Batiquitos Lagoon is home to a wide variety of plant life and wildlife. Its well-maintained, mile-and-a-half (2.4 kilometre) hiking and walking trail meanders along the north side of the Lagoon, providing the perfect opportunity to breathe in fresh coastal air, enjoy the soft breezes, and take in the symphony of birdsong. Whether you’re out for a leisurely stroll, a jog, or walking your dog, the trail offers a serene way to connect with nature while getting a bit of exercise.

Birdwatching is one of the Lagoon’s greatest highlights, attracting bird lovers from near and far. More than 200 species of birds have been recorded at different times of the year, including iconic species such as the Blue Heron, Great Egret, Lesser Scaup, Red-tailed Hawk, Mallards, Green Heron, American Coot, Nuttall’s Woodpecker, Ring-billed Gull, American Wigeon, Marbled Godwit, Black Phoebe, Song Sparrow, and more. The diverse habitats within the Lagoon offer a perfect environment for both migratory and resident species, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching year-round.

At the western end of the trail, the Nature Center provides a fascinating introduction to the Lagoon’s ecosystem. Visitors can learn about the history, wildlife, and geology of the area, deepening their appreciation for this remarkable habitat. The centre is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, where volunteers and staff provide insight into the Lagoon's unique ecosystem.

The health of the lagoon is overseen by the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation (BLF), a volunteer-driven non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and enhancing the Lagoon. Through educational programs, conservation efforts, and guided tours, the BLF ensures that this natural sanctuary remains a thriving habitat for wildlife for generations to come.

Whether you’re revisiting or experiencing Batiquitos Lagoon for the first time, now is the perfect time to lace up your hiking shoes, bring your dog, and immerse yourself in this stunning natural sanctuary. Take a stroll, enjoy the views, and consider supporting the Batiquitos Lagoon Foundation to help preserve this special place. At Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara, we’re proud to be part of this vibrant community, and we invite you to experience the beauty and tranquillity of Batiquitos Lagoon, just a short walk from your doorstep.
