Further strengthening its connections with the local community, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay has partnered with a UN-recognised environmental organisation to fight climate change at a grassroots level.

su-re.co, a Bali-based organisation, was recognised at the UN Climate Change Conference for its work helping coffee farmers affected by climate change. This includes European Commission projects on clean energy and the implementation of renewable biogas for roasting beans and cooking, a climate change field school backed by the Indonesian government, and negotiating fair trade-based contracts for farmers.

Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay is now serving su-re.co coffee and raising awareness about climate-smart farming through coffee demonstrations for all guests who join a class at Jala Cooking Academy. The experience is available for both private and group bookings, with all coffee proceeds going back to the farmers’ cooperative.

“There’s a lot that happens behind-the-scenes in terms of our sustainability and community programs, and we are proud to be a responsible tourism operator. We are now able to offer guests an interactive opportunity to experience sustainable coffee farming as part of a cooking class,” says Nicolas Senes, Director of Food & Beverage at the Resort.

While Four Seasons connects su-re.co with visitors to Bali, the program has also been incorporated into the curriculum for students at Montessori School Bali. The Adolescent Programme studied climate change, renewable biogas production and established a micro-business with a weekly pop-up cafe selling su-re.co coffee.

“As a result of our partnership with Four Seasons and Montessori Bali, su-re.co has been able to apply our research in the field and expand our work with farmers in Eastern Indonesia to implement clean energy and adapt to climate change,” said Prof. Dr. Takeshi Takama, founder of su-re.co. “These relationships make a real difference to the farmers we work with in remote areas.”

The coffee farming partnership is the latest enhancement to the Resort’s robust corporate social responsibility program. Other activities available for guests during their visit to Bali include:

  • Visit to a local special needs school and participation in dance performances, traditional weaving workshops and cooking classes with the students
  • Workshops with local artists through an on-site artist outreach program
  • Visit to the Zero Waste to Ocean community education centre by non-profit ROLE Foundation in Nusa Dua
  • Sampah Jujur – John Hardy Trash Walk in Ubud area
  • A tour of the Green Village sustainable living and housing community in Ubud area

About su-re.co

Its goal is to be 100 percent sustainable on every level (Think sustainable, Do sustainable and Be sustainable). Traded by international environment students, this product uses climate smart agricultural practices and 25 percent of sales goes directly into teaching, installing biogas digesters, and sponsoring farmers who are working towards sustainability.
