Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC presents The Audacity to SEE, an exhibition by local DC artist Halim Flowers from July 1 to August 31, 2021.

In collaboration with DTR Modern, the Hotel invites guests and the local community to join them in celebrating Halim Flowers, artist-in-residence with The Phillips Collection in the event of their 100th anniversary.

“We are thrilled to welcome Halim Flowers to showcase his works at the Hotel,” says Senior General Manager Marc Bromley. “Now in the third year of our Artist in Residence series, we are passionate about sharing the extraordinary artistic talents that are found in DC with our guests.”

Flowers is among a group of African American artists who have used their visual art platform to call for social change; however, he categorises his art as a “love movement.” Having spent the last twenty-two years incarcerated after being wrongly imprisoned as a youth, he used his time reading voraciously and found himself intrigued by scientific theories of time, economic theory and philosophy.

Flowers earned credits as a student through Georgetown University’s Prison and Justice Initiative and became inspired to write and self-publish eleven books while in prison. Since being released, Flowers has worked with Kim Kardashian for her documentary The Justice Project and collaborated with Kanye West in a spoken word performance. He has received the Halcyon Arts Lab and Echoing Green fellowships. He has also been featured in exhibitions at MoMA PS1 (Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration) and as a panellist at conferences on the campuses of many universities around the country. He is currently working on recording a spoken-word album and painting.

“My mission is to love everyone unconditionally, all of the time,” says Flowers. “Through The Audacity to SEE, my purpose is to live the love that I want to see in the world to inspire others to love radically beyond the superficial barriers that serve to separate us, barriers that obscure the fact that we are all connected to each other.”

DTR Modern has been at the forefront of the art market since opening its first location in 2003. Today, its seasoned gallery operation is the largest and most notable on the East Coast with five brick and mortar locations in Boston, Nantucket, New York City, Washington, DC and Palm Beach. DTR Modern’s program offers a significant privately-held selection of works by artists such as: Banksy, Basquiat, Bochner, Botero, Chagall, Condo, Connor Brothers, Dali, Dine, Frankenthaler, Haring, Hirst, Hockney, Indiana, Katz, KAWS, Koons, Lagemann, Lichtenstein, Longo, Manus, Matisse, Miro, Murakami, Mr. Brainwash, Picasso, Quinn, Richter, Ruscha, Slonem, Sultan, Warhol, Wesselmann, and Verbicky.

The Audacity to SEE by Halim Flowers will be on display in the lobby and public spaces of Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC from July 1 to August 31, 2021.
