Stretching Your Legs Away from the Capital

October 31, 2019,
Madrid, Spain

Madrid offers so much to the visitor that it may be tempting to stay close to Four Seasons Hotel Madrid and not venture out. But if you do, those excursions will be rewarded with UNESCO World Heritage Sites, centuries-old architecture, local and regional food and wine to savour, easily accessible skiing in winter, and much more.  As the Hotel's concierge team for suggestions, and put these recommendations at the top of your list.

Segovia

The spectacular Alcázar de Segovia, the Cathedral of Segovia, the old Jewish Quarter and the Roman aqueduct are all just some of the reasons why it’s worth travelling the 100 kilometres (62 miles) to see UNESCO World Heritage Site Segovia’s beautiful historical architecture – and don’t forget to sample their local food while you’re there.

Toledo

The former imperial capital of Spain, if you can only make one excursion out of Madrid during your stay, make it this one. Only half an hour by train, Toledo lives and breathes history. Don’t forget to head up to the Mirador del Valle to see an overview of this beautiful city, before diving into the narrow streets and exploring all that this UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer.

Skiing in Navacerrada, Valdesquí or La Pinilla

Just over an hour’s drive from Madrid you can be up in the mountains for a day of skiing or snowboarding in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula. While this may not be Courchevel, there should be enough white stuff to keep keen skiers entertained for a day or two. Puerto de Navacerrada is the closest, just 65 kilometres (40 miles) from Madrid, followed by Valdesquí, 75 kilometres (47 miles) away and a little larger. And if you really want to stretch your legs (and your skis), La Pinilla, located 120 kilometres (75 miles) from Madrid, might be worth the extra mileage for potentially more snow and fewer crowds.
