Wine Experts Invite Guests to Uncork While They Unwind at Four Seasons Resort Maui

Meet the somms at Four Seasons Resort Maui - nearly twenty introductory, certified and advanced sommeliers across the property.  As always for the Five-Star, Five-Diamond luxury resort, each employee strives to elevate the guest experience. These masters of craft promise to deliver memorable wine encounters.

Gone are the days of stuffy, old-world pretense.  Four Seasons Resort Maui somms are of the next generation - approachable, communicative and engaging. Having such an unusually robust team of sommeliers enables the Resort to diversify the role from expected experiences such as introducing a guest to a new bottle at dinner to sunset sabering ceremonies and industry-style wine experiences (held seasonally).

For guests of the Resort’s Elite Suites, these experts provide a list of unexpected experiences, such as “glassology” Riedel glass tastings and Ultimate Pairing Dinners, in which the menu is planned around personal wine preferences.  Guests of these suites will also have access to some of the world’s most revered and hard-to-find bottles through an exclusive wine list curated by resort partner Christian Navarro, president and principal of globally-recognised retailer and restaurant Wally’s Wine and Spirits.

As many learned from the instant cult classic documentary Somm, the road to becoming a sommelier is not for the weary. Not only is it rigorous and long, but it is expensive as well. The Resort proudly assists employees aspiring to develop their wine knowledge by financially supporting their pursuit of certification.  In addition, the Resort perpetuates this love of wine by encouraging frequent opportunities for the somms to embrace their art.  Wine enthusiasts property-wide (somm or not) meet for informal wine chats, attend special quarterly trainings, and highlight wine education during daily staff meetings in all three of the Resort’s fine dining restaurants - DUO Steak and Seafood, Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante and Spago.  Sommeliers of all levels gather weekly to engage in friendly competition.

The result is a culture of passionate and collaborative wine experts, offering a deep resource for guests interested in wine. The philosophy across the Resort is to offer wines that pair with the talented culinary team’s cuisine as well as the Resort’s sophisticated yet laid back atmosphere.  Most importantly to the somms is that guests enjoy themselves and not take things too seriously. “After all,” says certified sommelier and DUO Steak and Seafood manager Faith Schroeder, “wine’s only meant for drinking. Ultimately, I just want to see my guests smile.”
