Even the best-laid plans must be able to accommodate a few surprises. That’s what happened in the late 1980s, when workers converting an old building in Milan to a Four Seasons uncovered the first of a series of Renaissance columns that had been covered by brickwork.

Historians soon unravelled the story of an old convent that had been converted to a private residence in the late 1700s, when many of the features of the ancient church and cloister were hidden. Before long, frescos and stuccos emerged – many dating to Medieval times – and today they are part of the distinct décor that characterises the Hotel, including the spectacular soaring ceilings of its most favoured guest rooms.
