Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Organises Its 16th Run of Hope to Raise Funds for the Geneva League Against Cancer
Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva is actively involved in the fight against cancer, yearly organising its Run of Hope in support of the Geneva League Against Cancer. This year’s event will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2024, and is open to all: runners, walkers, children and parents with pushchairs. All are welcome to take part and share a convivial moment while showing their support and commitment to fighting cancer. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am, with the first race departing from Ile Rousseau at 9:30 am. Participants can choose from a 5km or 10km course, both of which are open to all entrants.
The Run of Hope initiative was born when Terry Fox, a 22-year-old athlete who lost his leg to bone cancer, made headlines in 1980 by running 5374 kilometres (3,340 miles) over the course of 143 days across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Terry had originally planned to run across the entire country, but he was forced to stop earlier than planned when cancer tragically reached his lungs. During the Run of Hope, he ran an average of one marathon a day every day. He passed away less than a year after raising almost 24 million Canadian dollars, reaching his goal of raising one dollar for every Canadian at the time.
Moved by Terry’s inspiring story, Four Seasons Founder Isadore Sharp made a personal commitment to the cause and wrote to 999 other Canadian executives asking them to support cancer research. Terry sadly succumbed to his illness the following year. The first Terry Fox Run in his memory was organised by Isadore Sharp and Four Seasons in 1981. Today, there are more than 9,000 Terry Fox memorial runs that take place around the world each year, all organised and run on a voluntary basis.
Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues organised its first Run of Hope in 2008. Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues has raised more than CHF 128,000 since 2015 through its annual Run of Hope. The funds help to support people with cancer and their families by providing them with assistance adapted to their personal situation. The Geneva League Against Cancer professionals assist patients throughout their illness by providing advice and support in various forms. The Geneva League Against Cancer also provides financial support for medical research and regularly intervenes in prevention and health promotion. It will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024.
The Run of Hope charity run in commemoration of Terry Fox is non-competitive and is open to all abilities.
