After graduation, Wendy Mitchinson began her career in the retail sector working for two highly regarded British brands (Marks and Spencer and John Lewis) but she soon discovered a passion for the hotel industry, allowing a move to her first regional sales role in the UK.
Having never been to Asia, joining Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in its London regional sales office as director of sales UK and Scandinavia in 1991 was a dream come true and was a significant move that would soon pave the way for several exciting, challenging and amazing roles and experiences in the region.
From the opening of Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur to VP sales and marketing of Asia Pacific, Wendy has both garnered a love for and specialist knowledge of several geographic markets and cultures and hotel operations in the luxury sector.
A move back to the UK saw Wendy fulfill her passion for learning where she returned to university to study for an MSc in organisational behavior. This was certainly a great achievement to be proud of. Understanding the importance engagement, learning and the changing face of work is exceptionally useful as a leader.
Wendy saw that China had incredible potential for the hospitality industry after completing her advanced studies. She joined Hilton Shanghai as director of business development (sales and marketing). This hotel allowed her to quickly make her knowledge current in both revenue management and distribution, the two areas that had developed the most, in addition to gaining vital experience in the rapid rise of the China market.
When Hilton Shanghai rebranded in January 2018, Wendy remained to support this transition and focused on several strategic projects including developing the brand architecture for the hotel, developing a new website and achieving a certification of excellence with Safe Hotels in Sweden for Safety and Security.
Wendy is delighted to have the opportunity to join Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake at this point in her career and return to the luxury sector. She hopes to bring the very best of her international and Asia experience to grow and position the Hotel to even greater heights. With an avid interest in leading teams, Wendy is passionate about helping people develop in their careers and to be their best selves at work and hopes to be able to make a difference and add value to the Sales and Marketing team.
Hangzhou is described as China’s "heaven on earth,” and with the UNESCO's World Heritage site of West Lake, this classic Chinese landscape is like no other: it provides a perfect backdrop for cultural, culinary and wellness experiences that Four Seasons Hangzhou at West Lake aims to develop.
Wendy enjoys spending quality time dining with friends, has a passion for music and has just started to learn to play the guitar. She is looking forward to deepening her knowledge of Hangzhou and exploring China’s best kept secret.
