Manele Golf Course at Four Seasons Resort Lanai Named Top Course in Hawaii by Golf Digest
Luxury Lanai resort showcases playability and hospitality on award-winning course
Manele Golf Course has been recognised as the highest-ranked public course in Hawaii by Golf Digest in their recently announced America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses Awards. The Signature Jack Nicklaus 18-hole course at Four Seasons Resort Lanai is built on lava outcroppings and features three cliff-top holes that use the Pacific Ocean as a water hazard. Manele Golf Course moved up to its current standing, ranking #21 in the list - up 8 spots from its #29 ranking last year and surpassing all others as the top rated public golf course in Hawaii.
The golf team has continued to enhance course conditions with a focus on attention to detail. Superintendent Seril Shimizu shares, “I take into account a variety of factors in my role, including water conservation, grass type, environmental conditions, and the expectations that our guests staying at a Resort like ours have.” But the thing Shimizu is most proud of is the commitment to excellence by the entire staff. He says, “Their strong work ethic and attention to detail ensure our guests enjoy a superior golf experience every time they step onto the course.”
Four Seasons attention to each guest extends out to the golf course. Scott Ashworth, Director of Golf, says, “We focus on our guests from the time they arrive until they leave. The course is unbelievably beautiful, immaculately maintained, and playable for almost all levels of play. We have five sets of tees, and moved the forward ones up as much as possible to provide a more rewarding experience for beginners or those that don’t hit the ball a long way.” Ashworth adds, “While we have tee times, we do not rush golfers to the tee and don’t pair them up if they would like to play alone. We also do a limited amount of play so we don’t have a need for marshalls out on the golf course. In that sense, Manele Golf Course feels more like a private experience as guests are able to play at their own speed without seeing many other golfers. And with every hole boasting an ocean view, sometimes you might get a little distracted, especially during whale watching season.”
Each golf cart comes equipped with GPS and Blue Tooth speakers to enjoy music during play or order food or drinks anytime. The professional staff carry out a variety of programs including Clinics and Golf 101 for beginners to sessions featuring Trackman 4 technology, which has the ability to analyse and video golf swings as well as assist in professional club fittings.
Complimentary fun events include Mini-Manele featuring six short holes on the driving range, Disc Golf or Rock N Range, an après golf experience with a cash bar, music and complimentary tips from the pros. Or for a great afternoon, get out and take part in the Sunset Nine, which features the opportunity to play the famous Ocean nine with complimentary rental clubs and your choice of a cocktail to close out the day.
Behind the scenes, the team is passionate about the game. William Foster, Assistant Golf Professional, leads sessions for Lanai’s younger players, from 5 to 16 years old, with a Junior Golf program complimentary to island residents. Foster says, “As a PGA Professional, I believe we have a calling to bring people into the game.” He continues, “It’s not only fun for the kids; I have a great time teaching a new generation of golfers and who knows, one day I’ll watch a tournament and say, I knew that player back when.”
