Longtime supporter of Maui’s vibrant art community Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea has announced its 2023 student mentorship program for aspiring young Maui artists. The program, called START: A Student Artist Immersion, will offer junior and senior high school children the chance to connect to some of the island’s top artists, provide a platform to show art at the Resort’s acclaimed Artists Showcase, teach them about the business of art, and supply a USD 3,000 scholarship to continue their development after graduation. The Resort is currently taking submissions from Maui-based high school juniors and seniors, and will select two recipients.

The START immersion includes:

  • A weekly spot in the Artists Showcase for three weeks in spring of 2023 (dates to be determined based on students’ schedules), in which the student will show and sell their works side-by-side the island’s most notable artists at the luxury Resort
  • A professional artist mentor paired with the mentee based on complementary style or medium to help guide them through the program
  • A one-on-one lunch at Ferraro’s at Four Seasons Resort Maui or artist studio visit, if applicable, with mentor artist
  • Mentorship session with Rosina Potter, Executive Director of Hawaiՙi Contemporary
  • A USD 3,000 scholarship to apply to continuing their education in the arts

“We were overwhelmed by the raw talent of the many applicants last year, and selecting two artists was difficult.  Mentoring the START recipients Cailyn Omuro and Sophie Salvador was a highlight of my year, and I’m excited to work alongside Four Seasons Resort Maui in supporting this next generation of Maui artists,” says art consultant Rose Potter, Executive Director of Hawaiՙi Contemporary.

To apply, junior and senior high school students should email the following to by February 21, 2023:

  • Images (.jpg or .pdf) of five completed works in any medium
  • Brief artist statement for each piece in the email
  • Brief essay (less than 500 words) describing the student’s interest in pursuing the arts after high school
  • Evening and weekend availability in March and April 2023

Inaugural START recipient Cailyn Omuro reflects about the program’s impact on her journey. “Through the START program I was able to meet and talk with some of the incredible artists that show their work at Four Seasons. Talking to them and the creator of the program, Rosina Potter, really opened my eyes to the many opportunities and ways in which art and creativity can be utilized,” she says. “The START program was an amazing experience that strengthened my passion for creativity and helped influence my decision to study art in college.”

The Resort looks forward to announcing this year’s recipients on March 1, 2023.
