Brendan O’Leary began his journey at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea as a server at Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante. Immediately immersed in the culture of the Forbes Five-Star resort, which has garnered acclaim as a culinary destination in the middle of the Pacific, he quickly discovered what he describes as a “family” of passionate service-minded individuals with a penchant for wine and a desire to exchange knowledge. Late-night friendly wine tasting competitions among colleagues ensued, and shortly thereafter, through the Resort’s assistance program that encourages developing talent, O’Leary earned a Sommelier Certification from the Court of Master Sommeliers. And four years after he began at Four Seasons, O’Leary has become the Resort Sommelier, the first with this title at the legendary resort.
O’Leary’s responsibilities include ongoing wine education for the team, curating unique wine and spirit pairings and guest experiences, and overseeing the Resort’s wine programs at DUO Steak and Seafood, Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante, Lobby Lounge, in-room dining, and special events. O’Leary is also the Resort wine lead for Four Seasons Maui Wine & Food Classic, developed in collaboration with president and principal of Wally’s Wine & Spirits Christian Navarro and named “’Best of the Best’ New Wine Festival” by Robb Report in 2019. Most recently, O’Leary’s wine curation at DUO Steak and Seafood was awarded Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence in 2021.
When curating the Resort’s beverage program, O’Leary works in tandem with the talented culinary team to ensure wines and spirits complement themes and flavours in the menus across the Resort and that they showcase regional variance, a variety of price points, and a memorable sensory experience. But his true passion lies in wowing guests. “I’m constantly in search of unexpected pairings that will surprise and delight. There’s nothing better than introducing guests to a new experience through food and wine, which will forever remind them of their time at Four Seasons Maui,” O’Leary explains.
Born and raised on Bainbridge Island, Washington in a household of academics, O’Leary found he had a natural gift for hospitality. At 15 years old, he began working as a server at a hospice home. Making connections with and caring for others left a profound mark on O’Leary and has translated into more than two decades of experience in the hospitality industry.
With personal values closely aligned with Four Seasons culture, O’Leary believes that implementing the Golden Rule starts with coworkers. “A team that respects and cares for each other results in organic and genuine service,” he says. “Our team is happy, so our guests are happy. It’s natural.” In his leadership role, O’Leary is personally investing in the growth of his peers as they did for him. Personally, he is currently continuing to further his wine journey through the Society of Wine Educators, where he is working towards becoming a Certified Specialist in Wine.
When not pleasing palates around the Resort, O’Leary can be found enjoying the beach with his wife Rose and his young son, or studying wine, of course.
