There are myriad hotel experiences in Boston, but nothing else quite like the one that Reed Kandalaft oversees as General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel and Private Residences One Dalton Street, Boston. “The city hasn’t had a new full mixed-use property for more than a decade, and it has never seen anything like this,” he says, beaming over the Back Bay address – Four Seasons second property in Boston – and the “different level of luxury” offered through a world of services, amenities and outlets in the tallest residential building in New England.

Key to the onsite experience is the talent that Kandalaft has assembled to deliver the service prized by Four Seasons clientele. “We were very fortunate to be able to attract Four Seasons managers from around the world and promote others from within. But we always rely on local talent as well, and Boston has a lot to offer.”

The Hotel is giving right back, he says, reeling off features including a cutting-edge Zuma restaurant; more than 20,000 square feet (1,860 square metres) of amenity space including a signature spa and 65-foot (20 metre) indoor lap pool with floor-to-ceiling window views; and steps away proximity to Fenway Park, home of the Green Monster…oh, and the Boston Red Sox.

With his Four Seasons career split between urban hotels and beachfront destinations, Kandalaft is right at home back in a city, arriving fresh from success as opening General Manager at Four Seasons Hotel at The Surf Club in Miami. He was drawn to the hotel industry because he likes interacting with people – simple as that. “I always felt interaction was so much more fun and dynamic than sitting in an office and planning things.” After earning degrees in hospitality management in Florida, he was recruited by an international hotel group and “fell in love.”

He joined Four Seasons in 2008, starting in Hualalai, Hawaii and then becoming Hotel Manager of Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, which earned a Forbes Five-Star rating three years in a row while he kept a watchful eye on operations. “We were so proud,” he remembers. “The team took the experience to the next level and then took it to the guest.”

With a new baby girl who arrived just months before the opening of One Dalton Street, Kandalaft and his wife are thrilled to be in a city so welcoming for raising a family. “Boston came knocking at just the right time,” he says. “It’s young and energetic with so much for locals to do, and medical care and a university system that can’t be beat.”
