Inspired by her grandmother, Alda Mendes was always bound for the hotel industry. She studied hospitality management with a focus on wellbeing, which was her first step into the industry before she went on to become an intern at the Sheraton Porto Hotel & Spa. “My grandma and her sister were spa therapists in a hotel and seeing them combine the elements of hospitality and wellness ignited this new found interest that I did not give much thought to before. She taught me to prioritize my wellness and introduced me to the many variations of the concept at a young age, which caught my interest and allowed me to share something in common with her. I appreciated how a yoga or meditation session would leave me feeling confident and new.” Her first five years with Sheraton saw Alda gaining experience in several operational departments such as housekeeping, spa, food and beverage, events and front desk, giving her an all-around understanding of the functions in a property.

After completing her postgraduate studies in London, Alda went on to manage the events of a software company but a year later realized this was not her calling. “The absence of hospitality left a hole that could not be filled and my heart wasn’t content with sitting behind a desk all day. I missed exchanging conversations, stories and most importantly, facing guests. I have the opportunity to share experiences every day while connecting with guests and employees through conversation and care that comes genuinely from the heart.”

Alda’s return to hospitality could not have been more fitting as she had the opportunity to redesign and launch the hotel her grandma used to work at by injecting a strong focus on wellness. “This was my chance to continue what my grandma had left behind and it only ignited more of my passion as I brought the idea to life with a thermal clinic – a concept that was very popular back in the day and garnering interest once again. This time in my career holds a very special place in my heart because I felt close to my grandmother and still do, to this very day, as I continue to place importance on wellness everywhere I go.” Unfortunately, in all of this, family circumstances saw Alda taking a break from her career. When she was ready to get back into action, she had difficulties finding a job while not relocating too far from home. “I heard Six Senses was being introduced in Portugal so I knocked on their doors and was offered the position of a guest experience maker. I told myself, no matter how much experience I may have, this was an opportunity and my skills will open the doors to my future, so there I was starting my journey again.”

Not long after, her natural leadership traits led Alda to become a director of rooms for Six Senses in Portugal, Brazil and Turkey, before securing the post as resort manager for Six Senses Ibiza. “I would not be the person I am today if I didn’t believe in myself and my team didn’t believe in me. This is what I want to share with our employees, because, in hospitality, the best result comes from our collective effort as a team. If my team needs me, they know I will always be there.”

After five years with Six Senses and travelling the world, Alda decided it was time for a new adventure and made her way to becoming the Resort Manager of Four Seasons Resort Seychelles. “My journey within hospitality has given me so many opportunities to learn as a person, travel the world, meet new people and I feel so grateful for the life I have chosen for myself as it has led me to the beautiful paradise island of Seychelles. I am so proud to call this my new home and share the natural beauty of Seychelles with all our guests. In such a natural environment, we have much scope to offer the best of wellness experiences to our guests through our in-house culinary, spa and fitness experts.” While she oversees the day-to-day operations of the Resort, Alda has worked closely with the Le Syel Spa team to allow guests the opportunity to not only escape from their everyday but also leave feeling refreshed and renewed as her priority lies on ensuring the team are happy and passing on the same energy to the guests as they interact with every day. “Each day the turquoise blue and lush green inspire me, I pass that energy on so every guest experience is nothing but the best of Four Seasons service and the destination’s pure, natural surroundings.”
