“From the earliest age, I was always drawn into the kitchen, constantly in search of knowledge on how scents and flavours were created,” says Desroches Island’s Resort Manager Nick Solomon. “Both restaurants and hotels always felt like magic to me and I was hooked.”
A creative soul with a passion to meet people, perhaps also motivated by his love of team sports, Nick has been fortunate to see his career take him to destinations that for many are only a dream vacation destination.
“I was so keen to begin my hospitality career that I had already worked for eight years in kitchen and restaurant service before even beginning my National Diploma in Hospitality Management at the age of 20. It was food that led me into the industry, but as I discovered more, my curiosity for operations and finance grew, ultimately pushing me towards more and more senior managerial roles.”
It may also be his sporting nature that gives Nick the drive to succeed and always strive for more, both professional and personally. “I’m training for a triathlon here in Desroches, yet some may argue that our flat coral island is a little too forgiving for such a purpose! Luckily, our twice weekly football matches for staff and guests by the runway are another addition to my workout, and a highlight of my week.”
In his role, Nick has oversight of all Villas, Suites and Residences, the dining outlets, the Circle of Connection Spa, all recreation facilities, and of course, a team of no less than 200 hospitality professionals. “When you live and work in the same place, team spirit goes far beyond the office, it is needed in the community. Here in Desroches, I can honestly say it is what the community is built on.”
It seems that for Nick, Seychelles has a very special appeal. “I have previously spent two and a half years of my career here and having the chance to return is something I will remain thankful for - especially when it comes to Desroches, where the raw beauty of nature is beyond compare.”
