Beauty From the Inside Out

Los Angeles, Westlake Village, U.S.A.

If you want to look and feel your best, you need to think about skin beauty from the inside out. This method ensures that your body has the right protection to combat daily threats. To achieve inside-out beauty, it’s important to focus on your skin health. Jana Williams, Lead Esthetician for The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village explains, “Skin health is essential to overall health. It keeps us hydrated and protects us from harmful pollutants. When you care for your skin, you care for your entire body and well-being.”

Skin Care for All Ages

Preventing sun damage is critical for all ages, from kids to adults. Williams explains, “Sun damage starts to show on your face in your 20s, so it is critical to prioritize skincare as early as possible.”

In addition to sun damage, you also need to consider keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the elements.

Here is some advice from Williams on how women can protect their skin as they age:

In your 20s

This is when sun damage can start appearing on your face. You should be concerned with melasma, which is a skin condition that causes dark spots or discoloration. It can be caused by a combination of factors, including excessive sun exposure, antibiotic usage, pregnancy, and other hormonal fluctuations. Skincare routine: Be diligent about using a moisturizer with SPF 30 or higher every day. This will protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays while keeping it hydrated.

In your 30s

Collagen and elastin production declines this decade, and accumulated sun damage becomes more pronounced. As a result, your fine lines may become more noticeable, and your skin tone can become duller. At the same time, your skin loses elasticity, causing your face to look more angular. Skincare routine: Apply sunscreen frequently and start using Retinol 3–4 times a week. Switching to an oil-based moisturizer can help hydrate your skin. In addition, consider using antioxidants such as vitamin C to repair sun-damaged skin. Additional skincare treatments: You may want to investigate more advanced skincare treatments that can help cellular turnover, such as micro-needling or chemical peels.

In your 40s

In this decade, your face will look more mature as you lose more subcutaneous fat. A decrease in elasticity can make your face look saggy as it becomes coarser. Unfortunately, your skin’s natural oil production slows down this decade, making it drier and flakier. You’ll also notice more fine lines around your upper lip and wrinkles on your forehead. Skincare routine: Focus on hydration and anti-ageing products, and increase Retinol use to five times a week. Also, switch to a heavy moisturizer that keeps your skin hydrated day and night (night is when natural rejuvenation occurs). Additional skincare treatments: Look for treatments that add vitamin C and hyaluronic acid to your skin.

In your 50s and beyond

Menopause can significantly impact your skin, causing excessive dryness, sagging skin, and enlarged pores. You might even have breakouts again, thanks to imbalanced hormones. Wrinkles and lines will continue to deepen.

Skincare routine: Moisturize like it’s your job to keep your skin hydrated. Also, switch from foaming cleansers to gentle cleansers without foam to reduce the amount of moisture you strip from your face. Finally, increase Retinol use to six times a week. Additional skincare treatments: Radio frequency treatments are excellent for stimulating collagen and elastin to help your skin become firmer and more radiant.
