Four Seasons Cartagena Introduces El Aljibe, a Hidden Speakeasy Inspired by Water and the Stories that Shape Colombia
Some places preserve history. Others transform it. Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena introduces El Aljibe, a hidden speakeasy set within a former water cistern, where cocktails inspired by Colombia's landscapes, ingredients and traditions are explored through a single unifying element: water.
In Cartagena, where fresh water was once a precious resource, cisterns were used to collect, protect, and preserve it beneath the city until it was needed. At El Aljibe, this history becomes more than a backdrop. The cistern itself serves as the intellectual and physical heart of the concept, inspiring four defining actions: collect, preserve, transform, and share.
From this foundation, water becomes the bar’s organizing philosophy and a lens through which to discover Colombia. El Aljibe examines the connections water creates between landscapes, communities, traditions and culture. As it moves from the high-altitude Andes through valleys, forests and rivers before reaching the Caribbean, water links places, people and ideas that might otherwise seem distant.
"At Four Seasons Cartagena, we are always looking for ways to create meaningful connections between our guests and the destination," says Annie Monnier, General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel and Residences Cartagena. "El Aljibe is more than a bar. It is an experience rooted in Cartagena's history and inspired by the stories that connect Colombia, inviting guests to discover the country through extraordinary cocktails, thoughtful storytelling and a remarkable sense of place."
Chapter One: Water Connects | The Magdalena
El Aljibe debuts with its inaugural chapter, Water Connects: The Magdalena, inspired by Colombia's most important waterway. Connecting the Andes to the Caribbean and historically serving as a route for movement, exchange and cultural connection, the Magdalena serves as the inspiration for the bar’s first story.
Exploring the question of what water connects, the experience unfolds through a series of cocktails inspired by the landscapes, ingredients and cultures connected by the Magdalena. Coffee, cacao, sugar cane, tropical fruits, botanicals and citrus are interpreted through contemporary techniques that reveal how water shapes flavour, texture and transformation.
Technique plays a central role throughout the experience. Fermentation, clarification, distillation, extraction, and carbonation offer different ways of understanding water's influence. Whether clarified, distilled, fermented, mineral, saline or carbonated, water takes on a unique expression in each cocktail.
An Evolving Story
Conceived as a living cocktail program, El Aljibe is designed to evolve through a series of chapters and editions. Future experiences will explore new relationships between Colombia and water through different places, ingredients, processes, communities and moments in time, while remaining rooted in the same founding idea.
For guests, the experience can be as simple as enjoying an exceptional cocktail in an extraordinary space. For those who choose to go deeper, El Aljibe offers a new way to discover Colombia, with each chapter revealing another connection between water, place and culture.
