Weaves of Tradition: Shaping Heritage at Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle

Rich in tradition and steeped in culture, the Golden Triangle region of Northern Thailand boasts a notable history. From tea and coffee plantations to varied hilltribes, diversity underscores every aspect of daily life as Northern Thai people continue to hold on to a revered culture that has been passed down through generations.
Intricate weaving techniques and designs take centre stage here, as versatile material such as bamboo and rattan are traditionally used to create household items such as mats, baskets, furniture, specialised tools and even artifacts. In addition to utility, these crafts have been a channel of artistic expression, with intricate patterns and designs becoming a hallmark of the region's craftsmanship.
Immersive Adventures in Northern Thailand’s Golden Triangle
Now, guests of Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle get an up-close and personal encounter with these traditions through curated Adventure Packages that range from two to five nights. “Our customised itineraries ensure that guests get a glimpse of the very best of not just our Camp experiences, but also the rich cultural heritage of this region,” smiles Paweena Waraha, Camp Manager. From fishing with the locals to a hands-on lesson in saa paper making, there is so much to discover during the off-the-grid adventure in the beautiful tented accommodation along the Ruak River.
Bamboo and Rattan Weaving with Local Experts
Among the highlight experiences, it is the Rattan and Bamboo Weaving lesson that is a standout. This signature craft is particularly associated with the Tai Lue people, who are renowned for their weaving skills, creating intricate and delicate patterns. Leading this program is Sawat, who oversees the expansive landscape and gardens at the Camp. It is Sawat’s love for nature, adventure, and innate connection with the Northern Thai culture that brought him to the Camp when it opened its doors nearly two decades ago. As the advisor of the landscape, his interest in gardening and maintaining nature’s bounty drew him instantly to this intimate setting. Celebrating a venerable tradition of the region, and one that has been passed down through generations in his own family, Sawat enjoys teaching guests the art of bamboo and rattan weaving. “I learned about bamboo and rattan weaving while watching my grandmother make baskets. While I did not learn the art from her, I was always inspired by her skill,” he recalls. From ornaments to artifacts, Sawat has crafted innumerable works of art. But it is the lamp that he created at the Camp with guidance from the other gardeners that he cherishes the most.
Sustainable Craftsmanship and Cultural Preservation
For guests who enroll for a hands-on experience, Sawat curates the session based on the skill level and interests. “Under the expert guidance of our gardening team, guests can learn to weave a variety of items such as lamps, cups and toys,” he shares. “One of the most unique requests we have had is a carp. Typically, we would use palm leaves to create this, but the team adapted to the request and taught the guest to make it with rattan – a wonderful experience for everyone involved!”
In celebrating these traditions, the Camp not only preserves a living heritage but also creates meaningful connections between guests, artisans, and the natural world — embodying the Four Seasons spirit of luxury with a genuine heart.
