Nestled along the serene banks of the Chao Phraya River, Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River shines as a beacon of artistic brilliance and sophisticated design. This exceptional fusion is the result of a collaboration between celebrated interior designer Jean-Michel Gathy of DENNISTON and local artist Pongsatat Uaiklang, known as Khun Dong, of Dong Sculpture. Together, they’ve created a breathtaking environment where contemporary artistry and Thai cultural heritage seamlessly converge. “Our urban resort is a reimagined oasis, infusing a sense of lush, green abundance into the vibrant heart of Bangkok - celebrating the Thailand of today,” says Lubosh Barta, Regional Vice President and General Manager.

A Visionary Partnership

Gathy, renowned for his iconic work at luxury resorts around the world, has infused the Hotel with a visionary aesthetic that beautifully complements the local landscape. His collaboration with Khun Dong, whose sculptures embody intricate traditional techniques, has created a space where every detail tells a compelling story. In the words of Gathy, the urban resort offers something for everyone, “sometimes dramatic, sometimes intimate, but always charismatic.”

Artistry and Culture in Harmony

As guests approach the Hotel, they are welcomed by striking Thai Cabinet Sculptures flanking the Hotel’s entrance. These contemporary interpretations of traditional Thai cabinets, designed by Gathy and executed by Khun Dong, set the stage for an immersive experience. Their interlocking black and gold forms pay homage to ancient carpentry techniques while ushering guests into a world where art and design converge.

Throughout the hotel, from The Lounge and walkways to the guest rooms and suites, every small art piece and sculpture has been handpicked by Gathy. This meticulous curation ensures that each artwork complements the Hotel's aesthetic, reflecting Gathy's personal touch and attention to detail.

The Arrival Courtyard features a series of water elements that embody the vitality of the Chao Phraya River. “Gathy’s use of water as a design element reflects the river’s dynamic energy and connection to Bangkok, often called the 'Venice of the East' due to its intricate network of canals, or khlongs, which are essential to the city’s life and character,” explains Lubosh.

As guests wander the Hotel, they are met by flowing water features that extend throughout the property, guiding them on a journey around the resort. This design creates a visual and sensory journey, evoking the essence of Bangkok’s waterways. The path, marked by the art installation, Stepping Stones, leads seamlessly to Yu Ting Yuan, where Gathy’s design vision continues to captivate, enhancing the experience of dining on exquisite Cantonese cuisine.

Design Inspired by Local Heritage

The Arrival Courtyard also features dramatic wall art inspired by the graceful movement of Thai fabrics. Designed by Khun Dong under Gathy’s conceptual guidance, the artwork showcases white elephant patterns - a revered symbol of power and prosperity in Thai culture. “Crafted using the bas-relief technique from Phetchaburi province, this artwork highlights the white elephant’s special significance in Thailand, as it is a rare and auspicious symbol of good fortune,” adds Lubosh.

At the reception, the counter’s design reflects traditional Thai fabric folds, seamlessly blending functionality with artistry. Nearby, the Reception Wall Art captures the vibrant colours of a sunset over the Chao Phraya River, adding a touch of elegance to the welcoming atmosphere.

“Examine the detailed pillar patterns at the reception, inspired by Thai gold belts worn with traditional Thai costumes, and the free-form chandelier crafted from baked clay by the Thai company Bellitas,” says Lubosh. “The chandelier’s organic shape invites personal interpretation, enhancing the space’s naturalistic theme and underscoring our meticulous design approach.”

Celebrating the River’s Essence

The Contour of Chao Phraya River installation, featuring gold accents, visually narrates the river’s winding journey through Bangkok to the Gulf of Thailand, capturing its bends and meanders. Meanwhile, the Life Reflection piece mirrors the shimmering sunset on the river, adding warmth and ambience to the courtyard. Designed by Gathy and curated by Loam Interiors, this installation enhances the space with its evocative beauty.

The Water Hyacinth installation emphasizes sustainability, showcasing floating plants from the Chao Phraya River now celebrated in Thai handicrafts. This collaborative piece between Gathy and Khun Dong highlight’s themes of creativity and environmental consciousness. “The plant was once considered waste, but now Thai artisans use it to create handicrafts, handbags, and furniture,” explains Lubosh.
