The Story of Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva
Overlooking the shimmering waters of Lake Geneva since 1834, Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva stands as one of Switzerland’s earliest grand hotels, seamlessly blending heritage with contemporary refinement. Today, it remains a distinguished landmark on the city’s hospitality scene, where timeless elegance is elevated by the intuitive service and exceptional standards synonymous with Four Seasons. Ideally situated on the right bank of the Rhône, just moments from the lake’s edge, the hotel offers captivating views of the Jet d’Eau and the majestic Alpine panorama beyond.
The Heritage
The creation of Hotel des Bergues is closely linked to the transformation of Geneva’s waterfront in the early nineteenth century, when the right bank of the Rhône was undergoing urban redevelopment, shifting from an industrial area into a more structured environment to welcome travellers arriving by boat. At the time, the arrival of steamboats in 1823 marked a turning point, prompting authorities to redesign the waterfront into an elegant gateway to the city. This ambitious project was led by engineer Guillaume Henri Dufour, also the name of the Hotel’s Salon Dufour, who designed the nearby Pont des Bergues, still standing just steps from the hotel today. The Société des Bergues was established with the objective of developing a hotel that would reflect this new direction, and when the property opened on May 1, 1834, it became the largest of its category in Switzerland. Designed according to neo-classical principles, many architectural elements remain today. Its original concept of pure style and “free of superfluous ornamentation,” continues to define its architectural identity, with colonnades, symmetry, and restrained detailing inspired by classical antiquity and the Renaissance.
The hotel has been associated with key moments in international history, notably in 1920 when it hosted meetings connected to the early activities of the League of Nations, with the Salle des Nations becoming a recognized venue for diplomatic exchange. It is within the Salle des Nations that some of the most significant chapters of international relations were written. Beyond formal assemblies at the Palais des Nations, high-level negotiations and strategic discussions were conducted in this room. Historians frequently underline that decisions shaped here carried considerable weight, sometimes exceeding that of official sessions. This “behind-the-scenes diplomacy” gave the Salle des Nations a distinctive and compelling legacy that continues to resonate today.
The heritage of the hotel extends even further back as the site itself is linked to Hans Kleberger (1486-1545), a German merchant and financier known as “The Good German” for his generosity. The land on which the hotel stands eventually became known as “En Cléberger,” later shortened to “Bergues,” giving the property its enduring name.
Over time, the hotel has continually evolved while preserving its historic integrity. A major refurbishment in 1917 transformed the interiors and added an additional floor while retaining the original structural framework, followed by further expansion with a new wing in 1967 to ensure the hotel adapted to the expectations of an increasingly international clientele.
Since joining Four Seasons in November 2005, Hotel des Bergues has evolved into a contemporary luxury destination offering 115 rooms and suites, a selection of dining experiences including a Michelin-starred restaurant, as well as a rooftop spa and dedicated event spaces that reflect both its heritage and evolution. The hotel is also actively engaged in community initiatives, notably with its annual Run of Hope, supporting the Geneva League Against Cancer and reflecting a long-standing commitment to social impact and sustainability.
Guest Rooms
Designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, the interiors combine classical elements with a more contemporary approach, featuring lighter palettes inspired by Lake Geneva as well as bathrooms made of natural stone. Large windows provide abundant natural light, and several rooms offer views over the lake and the city of Geneva.
The hotel offers a range of room and suite categories, including loft-style suites inspired by Swiss chalets and larger accommodations with separate living areas. The Presidential Suites present a more contemporary apartment style, with balconies overlooking the lake and the Old Town. The Léman Suites feature high ceilings and soft blue and beige tones inspired by the lake.
The Royal Suite offers the most expansive accommodation, with five bedrooms and a formal dining room, its design drawing inspiration from classical French interiors.

Five additional function rooms complement the ballroom and are suited to smaller gatherings, including board meetings, conferences and intimate events. Several of these spaces feature balconies with views over the lake and the Jet d’Eau.
