Heart of the Camp: The People Behind the Experience at Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle
As Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle marks its 20th anniversary, we reflect on a journey shaped not only by extraordinary destination but by people.
Set amidst the remarkable landscape of the Golden Triangle, the Camp has long been a place of discovery, connection and adventure. Yet its true spirit lies in those who bring it to life each day through care, intuition, and quiet dedication.
This three-part series celebrates the people behind the Camp's enduring legacy. From hosts and guides who create meaningful connections to those who protect the wilderness and storytellers of flavour, each reveals a different facet of the Camp's enduring legacy. In this first chapter, we meet the people whose warmth, generosity and genuine care shape the guest experience from the moment of arrival.
At the Camp, hospitality is felt in the smallest details: a thoughtful gesture, a shared story, a familiar face remembered. It is found in thoughtful gestures, shared stories, and moments of genuine connection. Behind these experiences are individuals who understand that true luxury is deeply personal.
The First Welcome: Camp Host Ralph
It is often in the smallest details that Ralph Apisit Wanlem’s instinct for hospitality reveals itself. On one occasion, he noticed a guest arriving in sneakers and casually asked whether they might prefer something more comfortable for camp life. By the time the guest reached their tent, a perfectly sized pair of sandals was already waiting outside. A simple gesture, delivered with impeccable timing.
How Ralph knew the exact size remains something of a mystery.
“I enjoy connecting with guests and sharing ideas and experiences with them. It helps broaden my perspective and learn about the world,” says Ralph. Each interaction offers a glimpse into a different life, a different perspective, a different story. In return, Ralph creates something increasingly rare: a feeling of ease, familiarity and genuine care. For him, guest happiness is not merely a measure of success, but a source of personal fulfilment.
"Living close to nature has taught me the importance of being flexible and adaptable," he reflects. "No matter how challenging the situation may be, nature reminds us to adjust, stay resilient, and move forward."
At the Camp, this quiet attentiveness is woven into daily life. It is found in thoughtful gestures, shared conversations and a genuine interest in the people who arrive from all corners of the world. For Ralph, hospitality begins with noticing. The rest follows naturally.
Guides of Discovery: Norman & Somkid
At the Camp, discovery often begins with the people who know this landscape best. They are designed to be felt.
Through guides Norman and Somkid, even the simplest activity becomes an invitation to understand the landscape more deeply, bringing to life its history, traditions, wildlife and the people who call it home.
Norman: The Guide Who Brings Stories to Life
Long before joining the Camp, Khemthit Phetthong, known to guests as Norman, was sharing the stories of the Golden Triangle with travellers from around the world.
"The tour industry is where I started out," he recalls. "I used to take guests to visit the Golden Triangle, where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet. I would explain the history of opium, which has now disappeared from the country. Being able to share these stories brought me pride and joy. I will continue passing them on."
Today, that curiosity and enthusiasm remain unchanged.
Guests quickly discover that no question is too unexpected for Norman. Ask why the elephants appear so comfortable around visitors, and he may point to a thoughtful detail hidden in plain sight: the indigo mahout uniforms provided in every tent.
Traditionally worn by elephant handlers, these lightweight cotton garments are well suited to the tropical climate. Yet their significance extends beyond practicality. While elephants have limited colour perception, they can distinguish shades of blue. The familiar shade helps create a sense of comfort and recognition, connecting the elephants to the people they know and trust.
It is a small detail, yet one that perfectly reflects the character of the Camp, where local traditions, wildlife and meaningful experiences are deeply connected.
Despite opportunities to move into more senior office-based roles, Norman has consistently chosen to remain where he feels most at home, outdoors, surrounded by nature and people.
For Norman, there is something special about sharing these stories while standing in the very landscapes that shaped them.
Somkid: The Art of Discovery
If Norman brings history to life, Somkid invites guests to see the familiar in a different way.
For Somkid Riyawaree, known to guests as Somkid, a familiar trail is never just a path through the forest, but an opportunity to discover something new.
He walks slowly and deliberately, often pausing to draw attention to details most people would pass without a second glance. A dried branch becomes the origin of an ingredient used in bubble tea. A footprint in the soil, the rustle of leaves, or a cluster of plants becomes an entry point into understanding the rhythms of the surrounding ecosystem.
His gift lies in transforming the overlooked into something fascinating.
Years spent moving through these landscapes have given him a deep understanding of the region and the communities that call it home.
Sometimes his journeys extend beyond the forest itself. He may lead guests to a nearby weaving community where traditional textiles are crafted by hand. Some of these handcrafted pieces eventually find their way back to the Camp as thoughtful details, including decorative bottle wraps that quietly connect guests to local craftsmanship.
Yet it is often his attentiveness that guests remember most.
Before and after each hike, sunscreen and refreshments appear almost instinctively, offered before guests have the opportunity to ask. By observing closely, Somkid intuitively senses when someone may need a pause, a story, or simply a moment of silence to absorb their surroundings.
For Somkid, guiding is never just about leading the way.
It is about care, observation, and connection.
The Spirit Behind the Experience
Whether through Ralph's thoughtful anticipation, Norman's captivating storytelling, or Somkid's gift for discovery, each brings a distinct dimension to the Camp experience.
Together, they represent something greater than hospitality alone. They embody a culture of genuine care that has shaped Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle for the past two decades.
As the Camp celebrates its 20th anniversary, these individuals remind us that while landscapes create a sense of place, it is people who create lasting memories.
In the next chapter of Heart of the Camp, we meet the Wilderness Keepers, the gardeners and rangers whose dedication helps preserve the extraordinary natural environment that surrounds the Camp.
