Behind every pristine pathway, every garden edge and every moment of natural beauty lies the unseen work of Sawat and his team. Fallen branches are cleared before they become hazards. Dry leaves are swept away. Hidden beehives are carefully monitored. Every path is tended not only for aesthetics, but for safety.

Born in Doi Sri Keaw, Chiang Sean District in Chiang Rai Province, Sawat grew up immersed in nature. As a child, he spent his days catching freshwater crabs and fish in the rice fields, sometimes for family meals, other times to sell at the local market. These early rituals shaped his lifelong relationship with the land: practical, respectful, deeply rooted.

His understanding of forests is instinctive.

“When forests are abundant and well preserved, clean air follows naturally,” he says. “They create moisture, support rainfall and allow farmers to continue growing rice successfully.”

To Sawat, healthy forests are not abstract ideas. They are living systems that sustain communities, agriculture and future generations.

This philosophy guides everything he does.

He speaks with particular pride about his years at the Camp, especially the period when the gardening team contributed to the property receiving global recognition for its landscape and gardens, an accomplishment he remains deeply grateful to have been part of.

But beyond accolades, it is the details that delight him most.

In the evenings, he admires the Camp’s lanterns crafted from banana bark, glowing softly against the dark jungle. It is this harmony between craftsmanship and nature that resonates most deeply with him.

Each day, he reads the landscape carefully. A healthy garden, in his eyes, is not simply beautiful. It is alive, harmonious and capable of inspiring everyone who walks through it.

He understands the consequences when that balance is lost. Deforestation can lead to flooding, erosion and environmental instability. Without trees to absorb and retain water, natural systems begin to decline.

As one of the Camp’s most respected elders, Pa Sawat sees it as his responsibility to share these lessons with younger generations. His message is simple yet profound: even if we cannot always create more, we must at least avoid destruction.

Silent Protectors: Camp Rangers, Anan, Poochit and Punnawit

Always present, rarely noticed, the Camp Rangers are the invisible rhythm behind every seamless day at the Camp and every peaceful night.

As the Camp settles into the sounds of insects and distant wildlife, footsteps through the darkness signal the presence of those who protect the property throughout the night.

While you move effortlessly between experiences, Rangers like Anan Phanchumphu, Poochit Sapphut and Punnawit Chanwarasin work quietly behind the scenes, coordinating transfers, monitoring the surroundings and safeguarding the Camp around the clock.

Rain, mud and complete darkness never interrupt their routine.

For Anan, the jungle’s cool shade and lush greenery provide a sense of calm. Poochit finds joy in observing the wildlife that surrounds the Camp, from rabbits and civets to wild chickens. Punnawit is inspired by the forest’s silence and balance, a reminder of patience, interconnectedness and nature’s quiet wisdom.
