Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake: Where West Lake Becomes Home

Hangzhou at West Lake, China

Nestled within the UNESCO-listed West Lake Scenic Area, Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake offers one of China’s most immersive luxury stays. More than a hotel overlooking the lake, it is a private Jiangnan garden retreat where guests experience Hangzhou through architecture, landscape, cuisine and culture.

Hidden behind traditional whitewashed walls and bamboo-lined pathways, the 81-room hotel unfolds like a classical Chinese garden. Reflecting ponds, stone bridges, pavilions and courtyards create a sense of tranquillity rarely found in one of China’s most celebrated destinations. Here, West Lake is not simply a view - it becomes part of everyday life.

Designed by acclaimed landscape architect Bill Bensley, the property draws inspiration from the refined aesthetics of the Song Dynasty. Timber screens, silk accents, and natural materials create interiors that feel both residential and deeply rooted in place. Guest rooms begin at 63 square meters, while suites and villas offer private terraces overlooking gardens, ponds and secluded courtyards.

“At Four Seasons Hangzhou, the design was never intended to be theatrical,” says Bensley. “It is about creating an experience of discovery, calm and connection.”

One of the hotel’s signature experiences begins with its private pier. Guests board a traditional wooden boat at sunrise, gliding across the still waters of West Lake while enjoying breakfast prepared by the hotel’s culinary team. The experience offers an intimate encounter with one of China’s most iconic landscapes before the city awakens.

Dining remains central to the hotel experience. Jin Sha, led by Senior Executive Chinese Chef Wang Yong, has become one of China’s most acclaimed restaurants. The restaurant has been awarded Three Diamonds by the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide for nine consecutive years and has retained one Michelin star since 2023 for four consecutive years. In 2026, it was also recognised again among Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants. Seasonal ingredients from the Jiangsu-Zhejiang region are transformed into refined dishes that balance tradition and innovation, with signature specialties including Crispy Chicken, Braised Pork Belly and Abalone, and Steamed San Men Crab with Rice Wine.

Wellness at the hotel is equally rooted in Chinese culture. The spa, also designed by Bill Bensley, is approached by a ceremonial water walkway leading to nine treatment suites inspired by traditional Chinese residences. Treatments draw upon the principles of the Five Elements and traditional Chinese medicine, incorporating herbal therapies, meridian techniques and aromatic rituals. The spa remains the only recipient in Hangzhou to have received recognition from SpaChina.

Yet the hotel’s greatest luxury is its sense of place. Guests can explore nearby tea plantations, temples and botanical gardens by bicycle, attend evening performances on West Lake, or simply spend an afternoon within the hotel’s gardens listening to birdsong and flowing water.

Service at Four Seasons Hotel Hangzhou at West Lake is quietly intuitive. Personal preferences are remembered, hidden corners of the city are recommended and experiences are thoughtfully tailored. The result is a stay that feels less like checking into a hotel and more like being welcomed into a private residence beside one of China’s most celebrated landscapes.

Across every season - lotus-filled summers, fragrant autumns, misty winters and blooming springs - the hotel offers a different perspective on Hangzhou. It is a place where time slows, where nature and culture coexist, and where the enduring beauty of Jiangnan can be experienced at its most intimate.
