Four Seasons Resort Hualalai Invites Guests to Experience Whale Season on the Big Island
Award-winning Kona-Kohala coast resort offers front-row seat to view nature’s extraordinary migration
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, recognized as Hawaii Island’s first and only AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Five-Star resort, awarded Two Michelin Keys, and Conde Nast Traveller’s Triple Crown Award, invites guests to experience the magic of whale season through a curated collection of private ocean excursions, immersive marine encounters and family-friendly experiences. From venturing offshore aboard the resort’s custom-built catamaran to exploring Hawaii’s marine ecosystems with its Natural Resources team, guests can discover the island’s extraordinary ocean life during one of the Pacific's most remarkable seasonal migrations.
Each year, humpback whales travel thousands of miles from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska to Hawaii’s warmer waters, where they mate, give birth and nurture their calves. The season traditionally begins in the fall, with sightings becoming increasingly frequent through the winter months. By December, daily sightings are common, while February and March generally offer some of the best opportunities to observe these magnificent mammals in their natural habitat.
For an intimate perspective on whale season, guests can venture offshore aboard Alakai Nui, the Resort’s 46-foot (14-metre) custom-built catamaran. Meaning great leader in Hawaiian, the vessel offers private excursions led by the Resort’s ocean activities team, Alakai Nalu, whose name translates to leaders of the waves. With an extended range designed for exploring beyond the immediate coastline, the catamaran provides opportunities to encounter migrating whale pods, discover secluded snorkelling spots and explore the island’s dramatic coastal landscapes, including black sand beaches. For a more hands-on connection to the ocean, adventurous guests can experience the coastline from a traditional Hawaiian outrigger canoe or a stand-up paddleboard, offering a different perspective on the surrounding marine environment.
Whale season also provides an opportunity for families to connect with Hawaii’s natural environment through experiences designed to inspire curiosity across generations. At Kumu Kai Marine Center, guests can join the Resort’s Natural Resources team for touch tank talks, offering an up-close introduction to fascinating reef creatures and the marine ecosystems that make Hawaii so distinctive. Tide pool tours, fish feedings and additional nature-focused activities invite younger travellers and adults alike to deepen their appreciation for the island’s underwater world.
Beyond the shoreline, eight pools offer a variety of ways to enjoy the resort’s tropical setting. Among them is the iconic King’s Pond, a 1.8-million-gallon (6.8-million-litre) swimmable aquarium home to more than 1,000 tropical fish and a resident eagle ray. For younger guests, the Keiki Pool features a shallow white-sand bottom, shaded areas and playful water features designed with little swimmers in mind.
For those who prefer to take in the season at a slower pace, the Resort’s oceanfront dining venues offer another opportunity to appreciate the Pacific, with the possibility of spotting whales or the iconic spinner dolphins on the horizon over a memorable meal. The Resort’s dining collection includes Pan-Asian inspired ‘ULU; NOIO, a sushi lounge and omakase concept; Miller & Lux Hualalai by Tyler Florence; Beach Tree Restaurant; Resident’s Beach House; and Hualalai Trading Company. Guests can also keep an eye out for passing whales from the Resort’s oceanfront golf holes, where sweeping coastal views make for an especially memorable round.
Whether exploring offshore, discovering marine life alongside the Resort’s Natural Resources team or enjoying a meal overlooking the Pacific, guests can experience humpback whale season through the many connections between Four Seasons Resort Hualalai and its remarkable coastal setting.
