Resort Mixologist Nicholas Gatz brings a unique career trajectory spanning various industries to his role at Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole. An eclectic background including experiences in fine dining, construction and guiding led him to his true passion in mixology – a field where he can blend creativity with technical skill. This diversity of experience allows Gatz to connect with people from all walks of life, enriching his approach to both his craft and interactions with guests.

A lifelong outdoors enthusiast, Gatz gravitates to nature and prefers living in a rural setting over an urban environment. He developed a deep sense of adventure growing up in Maine, leading him to visit all 50 states in the US by the time he turned 30, typically with his Airedale Terrier as a faithful travel companion. This wanderlust eventually led him to Wyoming and his current role with Four Seasons.

“Aside from the iconic National Parks nearby, there are so many differing and stunning views in all directions in this part of the world. The wilderness here really humbles and inspires me,” says Gatz.

At Four Seasons, Gatz most recently played a lead role in creating the opening cocktail menu at the new 80 Proof speakeasy, a passion project bringing his creativity to life. Gatz notes that many of the cocktails on the menu are concepts he has always wanted to showcase, but never had the right opportunity.

For Gatz, the art of mixology extends beyond the balance of flavours; it’s about the thoughtfulness behind each ingredient and the narrative it tells.

“What makes a cocktail interesting to me is not just the combination of tastes, but the intentionality of each element and the story behind its inclusion,” he explains. “My inspiration often comes from various forms of art - whether it’s a short film, a novel, a historical event or an album. I often find that when I’m stuck, a cocktail emerges from whatever has captured my attention at the time.”
