Hit the Hawaiian Trails with Four Seasons Resorts Lanai

An island of contrast invites hikers to get out and explore
Hawaii, Lanai, U.S.A.

Beyond the white, sandy beaches and blue waters of Hawaii lies Lanai, offering stunning vistas and exciting terrain to hike, from mist-shrouded ironwood forests to awe-inspiring rock formations. Guests at Four Seasons Resort Lanai and Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort can step off the beaten path through guided hiking tours, self-guided adventures and cultural exploration.

Lanai offers hiking tours varying in distance and elevation for all levels, including:

  • Pu‘upehe (Sweetheart Rock) Trail: A moderate but iconic short coastal hike from Hulopoe Bay and the rocky tide pools, leading guests to a 150-foot (45.7-metre) sea stack steeped in Hawaiian folklore. Tread lightly in this wahi pana (storied place) past ground nests of endangered sheerwaters and uaukani, arrive at the top to witness stunning views of Maui and even Oahu on a clear day.
  • Kaapihaa (Fisherman’s Trail): A scenic shoreline path that traces the rugged southern coast, perfect for spotting spinner dolphins at sunrise. Guidepost signs explain the historical significance of the area, including Kapihaa Village, once a fishing village in one of the island’s ahupuaa, and districts established to ensure each area had access to resources.
  • Pohakuloa, an ancient name for the gulch area, can be translated to a long stony trail. Guests can access the trail via a path behind the Damien Hirst statue in the front of Four Seasons Resort Lanai.
  • Koloiki Ridge Trail: The trailhead starts behind the Lanai Adventure Park and Sensei Lanai. This moderate 5-mile (8-kilometre) trek winds through lush forests of Cook pines and Strawberry Guava culminating in breathtaking vistas of the Maunalei Valley and the neighbouring islands of Maui and Molokai. On the descent, the views open up to Lanai City.
  • Kaiholena Ridge Trail - A moderate to challenging 5.3-mile (8.5-kilometre) loop hike, following 4WD roads, and then traversing an uphill trail with views of Hookio Gulch, where hikers can glimpse rare plant species. Trekkers may note fences along the trail – these are to protect rare or endangered species, trekkers are encouraged to keep them closed. Usage of this trail dates back to ancient times as it served as a passage between Koele and Lanaihale, presumably traversed to gather water and resources from the upland regions. Then, in the late 1800s through the mid 1900s, it served as a horse trail during the island’s ranching era. Usage continued throughout the mid-20th century by the families of Koele that hunted on horseback.
