There are many moving parts to holistic health, and it’s Adam Brewer’s job to keep them moving at Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina. “I was brought in to create a curriculum of classes that provides more robust offerings for wellness beyond massage,” he says of the programming he creates and tempts guests to engage in as Wellness Specialist of Naupaka Spa & Wellness. “This is a moment when many people are recognizing the importance of taking care of their minds, bodies, and spirits,” he continues. “With the right classes at the right times, we have everything here for them to achieve personal wellbeing.”

Brewer’s aim is to bring “a level of soulfulness” to his offerings, merging equal parts science and spirit into group classes on yoga, meditation, breathwork, fitness, and more. “There’s a natural rhythm to life that we try to instil in people,” he says, noting that he leads everything in his own unique style. “We listen to cues from the universe and honour what is presently showing up and shaping their lives.”

Brewer’s summer 2022 arrival at the Resort was well timed to support guests newly enlightened to the benefits of wellness. With global health concerns and various tensions, a lot of things have been weighing on people’s lives of late, leading many to turn inward seeking remedies. “People now realize their consciousness is ripe for introspection, and if they take better care of themselves, they can contribute more beneficially to the universe,” he explains. “It’s an opportunity, a pivotal point to slow down and refocus on enjoying and simplifying things again.”

A natural athlete, Brewer grew up on the western edge of Lake Erie in Toledo, Ohio, playing soccer, basketball, and tennis in high school and college. He took what he calls “a western approach” to maintaining his fitness and health, as well as to his career as an athletic trainer, which began with coaching adidas Tennis Camps at his alma mater.

Then, in 2005, he sustained a back injury. It was a wake up call and a turning point. “It caused me to realize I needed help.” That came from an ayurvedic healer, the wife of a tennis client, who, he says, “changed my life. The treatments were the first time I had experienced the feeling of unconditional love and peace of mind.” His back challenges quickly dissipated. “My western doctor told me I’d dodged a bullet.”

The ayurvedic treatments opened “a portal” for Brewer, sparking his interest in meditation, yoga, nutrition, and the like, as well as leading others toward holistic health. He dove right into specialities well off the tennis court including breathwork, mind/body fitness, and conscious evolution coaching.

He’d been self-employed in Los Angeles for 26 years when his career turned toward Four Seasons. With his life partner Liz desiring to return back home to Hawaii, Brewer applied to be a tennis coach at the Oahu Resort. A month later, he heard from the interim Spa Director who was looking to bolster the offerings of Naupaka Spa & Wellness, including moving on from independent contractors to establish an in-house presence for wellness programming. “They wanted someone who could wear many hats and be the face of fitness and wellness. With my background, I fit the bill.”

Now right at home on Oahu and in the wellness groove at the Resort, Brewer says he has his “dream job, doing all the things I like under one roof.”  Meantime, he and Liz are excited to be raising their son in nature connected to Hawaiian culture. “I left behind everything I’d built in LA, but with no regrets. Hawaii just feels right in my soul.”
