On November 17, 2024, more than 5,000 runners, volunteers and supporters gathered at Marina Barrage for Run For Hope 2024. Runners in the 5 km and 10 km categories crossed the starting line, transforming the venue into a vibrant display of community spirit and resilience – with each stride symbolising their dedication towards a cancer-free future. The event was graced by Guest-of-Honour Mr. Eric Chua, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Social and Family Development, who flagged off the event.

A Community's Commitment to Advance Cancer Research

Spearheaded by Four Seasons Hotel Singapore since 1993 and organised in partnership with the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS) since 2008, Run For Hope is a non-competitive leisure run that has become a mainstay in Singapore’s running calendar. The event aims to raise awareness and support for critical cancer research conducted by dedicated clinicians and researchers at NCCS to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and care for those affected by cancer in Singapore.

Run For Hope 2024 has garnered over SGD 200,000 in contributions to date, with a cumulative total of more than SGD 1.9 million, showcasing the event’s unwavering dedication to supporting cancer research. This achievement reflects the collective passion and determination of participants, sponsors, and volunteers who unite annually for this meaningful cause.

In his opening speech, Rami Sayess, President of Hotel Operations - Asia Pacific at Four Seasons, shared, “At Four Seasons, we are guided by the Golden Rule: treating others as we would like to be treated. This philosophy extends to our planet and the communities we serve, inspiring our commitment to show love, kindness, and empathy in everything we do. Today’s remarkable turnout and the generous contributions raised are a testament to our community’s unwavering dedication to advancing cancer research. Every dollar raised pushes the boundaries of what’s possible, funding groundbreaking research and developing innovative treatments that improve patient care and create a positive, lasting impact for generations to come.”

Driven By Hope: Running Towards a Cancer-Free Future

For many participants, it was not just a race; it was a heartfelt tribute to loved ones who have been affected by cancer and a commitment to those still battling the disease.

"Most of us have had a loved one who has been affected by cancer and we know the devastating effect it can have on so many lives. Every step taken at Run For Hope today will go a long way to directly support the work of NCCS doctors and researchers who work tirelessly to improve the diagnosis, treatment and care of cancer and give hope to all who are diagnosed with the disease,” shared Prof Lim Soon Thye, CEO, NCCS.

This year’s participants included inspiring advocates such as breast cancer survivor Paula O'Callaghan, who supported her domestic helpers through their cancer diagnoses. From providing insurance and attending radiotherapy sessions with them, Paula continues to embody Run For Hope’s spirit of solidarity. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Jansen Jing completed a 500-kilometre solo run in Japan to support cancer research, raising more than SGD 20,000 for NCCS, despite the demands of his final school year.  He and his family joined thousands at the starting line of Run For Hope 2024, continuing his commitment to life-saving research. Participants were invited to dedicate their runs by placing their bibs on the “Bibs of Bravery” wall, creating a heartfelt tribute to honour their loved ones or those who inspired their journey.

"Today, we witnessed the incredible power of community as participants came together not just to run but to raise awareness and support cancer research. The overwhelming support we received today reminds us that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a larger mission. Together, we are fostering hope and paving the way for advancements in cancer care that can change lives,” said John Wu, Regional Director of Engineering at Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and Chairman of Run For Hope.
