About Chef Marlene Vieira

Chef by heart, soul of the north, a woman with a firm grip, possessing a deep-rooted connection to traditional Portuguese cuisine and a genius at recreating it. Her journey began early on. At just 12 years old, she asked her parents to let her work in a restaurant during the summer holidays. She then began to split her time between school and the kitchen, and at the age of 16 she enrolled at Escola de Hotelaria de Santa Maria da Feira.

Marlene's culinary adventures led her to diverse settings, including a stint at a boutique hotel in Vila do Conde and later, an enriching experience in New York City. It was during her time at Alfama, a Portuguese restaurant in Manhattan, where she rediscovered Portuguese cuisine. Returning to Portugal, she made her mark in five-star hotels and renowned restaurants. At the age of 31, she decides that she wants to go solo and opens Avenue, right in the middle of Lisbon's city centre. For three successful years, she showcased her work with great success, until the birth of her daughter Isabel prompted a new chapter.

Marlene's influence extended beyond Portugal's borders, with appearances at prestigious gastronomic events and on television series from networks such as the Portuguese RTP.

In a predominantly male-dominated industry, Marlene Vieira stands as a beacon of inspiration for more women, advocating for gender parity. Zunzum Gastrobar, launched in 2020 at the International Cruise Terminal in Lisbon, is already a perfect example of her energy, determination, and innovation. Two years later, Marlene unveiled her eponymous restaurant, Marlene, a testament to more than three decades of culinary expertise and dedication to this industry.
