Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires Unveils the Restoration and Revitalization of a City Icon: La Mansión Álzaga Unzué
Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires announces the completion of a meticulous restoration and enhancement project of La Mansión Álzaga Unzué, an architectural jewel declared a Cultural Heritage Site of the City of Buenos Aires and a symbol of the city’s history.
Built in the early 20th century as a wedding gift from Félix Álzaga Unzué to his wife Elena Peña, the Mansion is a unique example of the Belle Époque splendour in Argentina. Inspired by French palaces, it has witnessed the city’s social and cultural history, hosting distinguished personalities and memorable events.
With a significant investment, the hotel carried out an artisanal restoration that brought back the original beauty of every corner. Room by room, specialists in heritage restoration worked with respect for the original materials, techniques, and finishes:
- Floors: complete restoration of French oak flooring and marble thresholds, replaced with carefully selected pieces.
- Marble and bronze: polishing of all marble brought from Italy and the French massif, including the famous 600-kilo Italian marble staircase; polishing of bronze railings, doorknobs, and fittings.
- Boiseries and gilding: cleaning and polishing of wood-panelled walls, recovery of their original finish, and restoration of gold leaf details by renowned restorer Fernanda González, who also worked on the Teatro Colón.
- Carpets and curtains: custom-made carpets featuring the Mansion’s historic pattern, crafted with 80 percent wool and 20 percent nylon (1,500 gram density) for salons and staircases; new curtains in imported silk shantung with handwoven trim.
- Woodwork and doors: recovery of the main doors to their original wood, removing accumulated layers of paint.
- Lighting and exterior: complete cleaning of the façade, restoration of French tile roofs, and a new exterior lighting design highlighting the architecture at night.
- Sustainability: installation of a fresh herb garden on the Mansion’s terrace for the hotel’s culinary use.
In the Royale Suites 102 and 103, furniture, mirror salon, and design details were renovated, continuing the hotel’s commitment to excellence in hospitality.
“La Mansión Álzaga Unzué is not just a historic building: it is part of Buenos Aires’ soul. Restoring it with the care it deserves is our way of honouring its legacy and offering our guests an experience that blends history, luxury, and Argentine warmth. This work not only enhances the property but also preserves an icon for future generations,” says Renan Astolpho, General Manager of the hotel.
With this revitalization, Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires reaffirms its commitment to heritage preservation, exceptional service, and the creation of memorable experiences that transcend time.
