“More than anything, my focus is on giving guests a very nice experience that is all our own, and inspiring our team to do the same.” That’s Edgar Niebla talking about his turn as Resort Manager of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Cabo San Lucas at Cabo Del Sol. With its location in a destination long established with luxury brands, Niebla sees the Resort’s unique spin on hospitality as rewarding guests with what they travel for. “The Mexican culture of hospitality is at the heart of everything we’re doing here. We want people to feel as though they’re vacationing in a friend’s home, not in a hotel.”

Tasked with minding operations across the property in the heart of the action of the Golden Corridor of the Baja California Peninsula, Niebla has plenty on his plate, from eight dining and drinking outlets showcasing local and international fare to a lush sanctuary for spa and wellness, three ocean-view pools with hot tubs and cabanas to all sorts of water sports on one of the best beaches for snorkelling in the region.

He believes strongly that maintaining a “human connection” is key to success at managing the Resort team that brings all of the above and more to life for guests. “It is vital for our ‘internal guests’,” as he calls staff, “to feel comfortable in their roles. At the end of the day, I want them to know that they’re working with me rather than for me, and I’m doing the same with them.”

For guests, Niebla approaches every interaction as an opening to build relationships that encourage people to return. The best way to accomplish that, he says, is by making things happen. “It’s funny: I’ve always found that smoothing things over can create real connections. I’ve made some very good friends that I’m still in contact with just by taking care of guests.”

The son of businesses owners hailing originally from Mexico City, Niebla became intrigued with the hospitality industry in his early adolescence while living on his own and working at hotels to earn money for school. “I wanted to be an engineer, but after a couple of years moving between restaurants, the front desk and the concierge, I really started to like hotels.”

While studying business administration and tourism and travel management, Niebla decided that the luxury segment would be the best route for him to travel. Following college, he sought work with a top brand and was chosen over many other applicants for the front desk of an international address in Cancun. He later moved on to spend 15 years in management with another luxury brand, climbing in rank in the rooms division before returning to his former employer as a hotel manager.

Now in deep at his first Four Seasons address, Niebla is enamoured of the company culture. “The most positive aspect for me is that Four Seasons walks the talk and leads by example while staying true to its roots. Everyone is here to create great moments for our guests, but they also want to progress. Having support from the company for both makes all the difference.”

Intent on taking the experience he has gained to make the most of his career at Four Seasons, Niebla is appreciative of the beauty of the Resort and the vibe of Cabo del Sol. He likes exploring the region with his family, especially his daughter. “We’ve done so much together over the years,” he says, sort of wistfully. “She’s a teenager now, so it’s not that easy anymore. But we still have great communication and talk all the time.”
