Four Seasons Resort Hualalai Unveils Newly Renovated Hualalai Golf Course
World-class golf resort completes multi-million-dollar renovation, including transformation of the golf experience with updated greens and a recently debuted, state-of-the-art instruction and practice facility
Four Seasons Resort Hualalai - the only Five-Star, Five-Diamond Resort on Hawaii Island - today announces the completion of a significant renovation to the Hualalai Golf Course, the first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course on the island. Known for its famed 17th hole that offers a green that “touches the ocean,” the course debuts with reshaping of the greens and bunkers, among a modern new Platinum Paspalum turf, significantly enhancing the year-round playing conditions.
“Hualalai Resort is known as one of the most highly-regarded golf resorts in the world, and the team continues to reinvest in the enhancement of the experience for our owners and guests,” says Four Seasons Resort Hualalai Director of Golf Brendan Moynahan. “This renovation amplifies the original beauty of the course Jack Nicklaus designed, producing a more superior experience for players.”
As the course's first major renovation since its completion 24 years ago, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai team remained focused on keeping the integrity of the original course. The par-72 layout weaves through the Big Island’s challenging lavascape, a unique juxtaposition of striking black lava rock, spectacular ocean views and dramatic shoreline vistas. The new, professional level turf transforms both the playability and appearance with its unique feel and rich emerald aesthetic. Original contours have also been enhanced to provide more dimension to the greens. The renovation will make its professional debut at the upcoming Mitsubishi Electric Championship, occurring January 19-23, 2021. Hualalai Resort has played host to the annual Mitsubishi Electric Championship, in collaboration with PGA Tour Champions and title sponsor Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc, since January 1997.
Complementing the renovation to the golf course, Hualalai recently announced a new addition to its award-winning golf program, the Hualalai Golf Hale. This 3,000 square-foot (280 square foot) instruction and practice facility is the ultimate destination for golf enthusiasts of all ages, including Resort guests and Hualalai Club members. In addition to exclusive programming to improve the golf game with state-of-the-art technology and expert instruction, the facility doubles as an entertainment venue with a multitude of games, audio-visual flexibility, and food and beverage opportunities.
The first and only facility in Hawaii of its kind, the Hualalai Golf Hale is located at the driving range serving the Hualalai Golf Course. In addition to instruction services, programming includes on-course lessons, mini golf schools, full-day retreats, multi-student lessons, indoor “learn and play” sessions using TrackMan flight simulation, fittings and other custom programs. Three hitting bays line the side of the facility along the range, while two outside bays are open for individuals to hit onto the range, also functioning as private classrooms. Each bay features TrackMan launch monitors, and the entire practice area is also fitted with TrackMan Range, allowing those playing on their own to record their statistics through a free mobile app.
The middle bay hosts the Topgolf Swing Suite, an indoor teaching studio featuring a golf simulator and lounge. The tech-laden Swing Suite combines food, fun, serious instruction, and a menu of games, both golf and non-golf, designed for all ages. The building’s lounge and comfort station boast a full kitchen, beverages, snacks and various sitting areas with large-screen TVs. The Golf Hale also features a small merchandise area, selling equipment such as gloves and balls.
The Resort recently appointed Brady Riggs as the Hualalai Golf Hale’s Director of Instruction, where he leads and oversees all operations of the training facility. With more than 30 years of experience in golf instruction, Riggs joins Four Seasons Resort Hualalai from Hansen Dam Golf Course in Pacoima, California where he created a new training facility and established innovative practice plans to expedite player development and improvement in all areas of the game. For the past 13 years, Riggs has been named as one of GOLF Magazine’s prestigious Top 100 Teachers in America, and GOLF.com regularly features him in their training and instruction videos online. He has also published more than 200 articles for Golf Tips Magazine and has appeared on the cover more than 12 times. In 2017, Riggs was inducted into the Southern California PGA Teaching Hall of Fame.
In addition to the Hualalai Golf Course, the Resort features the Ke`olu Course, a private 18-hole Tom Weiskopf-designed course, exclusive for Members of the Hualalai Club. There are also two practice facilities, including a short game practice area at both courses, three putting greens with two at the Ke`olu golf course and two teaching pros on staff at each course.
