Mpho Tsolo

Guest Experience Manager
“I have a passion for seeking out hidden gems and love to give advice on how to best experience the city. Most guests stay for one night and then say they should have stayed longer when they realise how much there is to do in Johannesburg. Many times, they end up deciding to extend their stay."

Mpho Tsolo grew up between Johannesburg and Vryburg in the North West Province, an area of the country often referred to as the Texas of SA.

She started her professional life working as a sales assistant in the African craft boutique in 2004, and from her many daily conversations with guests developed an ongoing curiosity about what the city had to offer. Mpho studied hotelkeeping and catering at high school. “That’s where I learned about the depth of hospitality, and I found I really enjoyed interacting with guests.”

Mpho is an enthusiastic ambassador of the many attractions that Joburg has to offer. “The best thing about my job is being able to share Johannesburg life, arts and culture with guests,” she says.

Among her own personal favourite places are the Rosebank and Maboneng precincts, and the Magaliesberg countryside just outside the city. “The best way to spend a day in Johannesburg is by taking a tour. Explore Soweto, visit Joburg’s art spaces and plan an escape to the Sterkfontein Caves,” are among her top recommendations for first-time visitors.

Mpho is also a foodie and she considers Joburg’s unique taste as being defined by the different mixtures of cuisines, cultures and flavours one can find in the city. As a concierge, when it comes to food Mpho always has great recommendations to share with guests looking for tips on the latest venues to try.

“There is so much talent when it comes to the food scene in SA, with different cuisines, ranging from the classic open South African braai kitchen to cuisines from around the world. My current recommended restaurants would have to be Flames at Four Seasons, which has one of the best views of Joburg as an urban forest – spectacular at any time of year, but even more so in summer and spring! Then there is Marble by Chef David Higgs, The Short Market Club and for fine dining, The Test Kitchen Carbon both by Cape Town Chef Luke Dale Roberts. For meat lovers, I highly recommend The Blockman in Parkhurst and The Grillhouse in Rosebank, Sandton and Melrose Arch."
