Legacy of Hope: Four Seasons Resort Langkawi Hosts the Island’s First-Ever Terry Fox Run to Raise Funds for Cancer Research

The Terry Fox Run, a global event honouring the legacy of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, is coming to the island of Langkawi for the first time ever.

On July 6, 2024, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi invites local residents and Resort guests to make a collective stride towards a brighter, healthier future without the fear of cancer. Gather at Dataran Tanjung Rhu for the Terry Fox Run, which will begin and end at the same spot - 7:00 am for 10k route and 7:15 am for 5k route. One hundred percent of the funds raised by the event will go to Cancer Research Malaysia.

Participants can complete the 5 or 10 kilometre route at their own pace: run, jog or walk to show solidarity and support cancer research. Being a non-competitive charity event, no official results will be recorded. Supporters are also welcome to cheer on the participants and join the cause by purchasing Terry Fox Run 2024 t-shirts, with all proceeds marked for Cancer Research Malaysia. Several Four Seasons team members will also be joining the run.

The history of the Terry Fox Run goes back to 1980, when 22-year-old Terry Fox, who lost his leg to bone cancer, ran 5,374 kilometres (3,339 miles) across Canada to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Through rain, snow and heat, he continued his Marathon of Hope until he was forced to stop because cancer appeared in his lungs. He passed away the following year, but not before raising 24 million Canadian dollars for the cause.

Inspired by Terry’s courage and vision of a cancer-free world, Four Seasons founder Isadore Sharp made a commitment to upholding his legacy, working closely with several sponsors to organize the first-ever Terry Fox Run in 1981, which drew more than 300,000 participants. Today, more than 9,000 Terry Fox Memorial Runs take place around the world annually, supported by Four Seasons in several locations.
