Seven Design Stories to Discover at Four Seasons Hotel Osaka

Osaka, Japan

Drawing abundant inspiration from its surroundings, Four Seasons Hotel Osaka introduces a storied journey into local culture, history and aesthetics. Immerse in a new expression of Osaka through a collection of spectacular spaces, meticulously curated by a team of acclaimed Japanese designers, including CURIOSITY, SIMPLICITY and DESIGN STUDIO SPIN.

Known as Japan’s “City of Water” owing to its numerous rivers and waterways, Osaka is a longstanding hub of commerce and trade. Stitched into the fabric of the city is a thrumming energy, springing from its historical merchant communities. Feel a friendly, lively buzz in the air, distinctly different from Tokyo and Kyoto.

Osaka’s kaleidoscopic richness is reflected across the interiors of the Hotel, inviting guests to connect with the true spirit of the destination. In true Japanese style, the design sensibility bridges part and present seamlessly, with an eye to the future.

Here are seven design stories travellers can experience during their stay at Four Seasons Hotel Osaka.

1. City of Water — go with the flow

Feel an instant connection with the City of Water. Housed in a soaring sailboat-inspired building, the Hotel looks out at panoramic views of rivers and waterways; one can even see the sweep of Osaka Bay on the west. Channelling the dynamism of moving water, a language of motion unfolds across the interiors through thoughtfully selected motifs and materials.

On the 36th floor, the expansive wellness facilities evoke a flowing journey to renewal, with muted colours, curvilinear shapes and soft transitions setting the stage for a healing connection with water. Public and private Ofuro (Japanese baths) showcase Osaka’s famed bathing culture, while the stone-clad swimming pool forms an oasis in the sky. Don’t forget to stop by Ayako Uyeda’s signature terrazzo column, a masterpiece of fluidity at THE SPA entrance.

2. Path of Discovery — ready, set, explore.

Step through the sliding glass doors at the entrance and let the adventure begin! Guests can follow their curiosity down the “path of discovery” — a succession of story-led spaces, each with its own distinct mood and style. From the intimacy of CHA tea lounge to the action-packed open kitchen of Farine bakery to the garden-inspired joy of Jardin bistro, the Lobby floor reveals a new tale around every bend.

Traditional artistry receives pride of place. Note the subtle reflections and luminosity of the walls, diligently created with metallic powders. The satin-like black wood showcases yakisugi, the ancient Japanese art of charring cedar wood to give it sheen and durability.

3. Osaka Castle — living history

Built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the 16th century, Osaka Castle is the beating cultural heart of Osaka. Four Seasons pays homage to this iconic spot with a striking design arrangement at the entrance. Observe the textured stone pillars, wrapped by delicate wooden louver screens and interspersed with shimmering water pools — a nod to the moat-encircled fortress at Osaka Castle, just 15 minutes by taxi from the Hotel.

4. Lacquer Box — oh so Osaka

The bright, bold elevator zone stands in striking contrast to the subtle, soothing aesthetics of the reception area. Dressed in dramatic orange hues that express the vivid energy of Osaka, the elevator zone resembles an upside-down urushi (lacquer) box. Urushi is a distinctive Japanese art form that has been refined over a period of centuries. Negoro urushi, native to the Osaka region, is particularly renowned for its vibrant colours.

5. Puzzle Box — abracadabra!

If one visits the second-floor events space at a quiet time, they will be greeted by what appears to be an unassuming wooden pillar. This “pillar” is actually an iconic coffee bar, which springs to life during special celebrations. Inspired by the playful concept of a himitsu-bako (“secret puzzle box” in Japanese), the cleverly designed doors slide open as if by magic, revealing a sleek bar counter for drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

6. Tatami Living — like a local

Experience a timeless way of life at GENSUI, the dedicated Japanese floor, which offers a pitch-perfect modern take on the Ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). Inspired by the layout of local homes, each room and suite welcomes guests with a doma entrance area to remove their shoes before they step inside.

Walk barefoot on rush-grass tatami floors and drift into a locally-inspired sleep experience with futon bedding. Custom low-slung chairs make it possible to sit closer to ground level, in keeping with Japanese custom. From washi paper headboards to sudare blinds, the little design details add up to a wonderfully immersive stay.

7. Laughing Buddha Room — hidden in plain sight

Discover an exclusive speakeasy-style venue next to Bar Bota, the glamorous destination bar on the 37th floor. Reserved for private events and themed celebrations, this hidden spot can be accessed via a decorative item in the main area of Bar Bota. Once you find the secret spot, a door slides open and voila! Welcome to an exciting realm, tailormade for extraordinary moments and forever memories.
