Improve Sleep Quality at Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort
In today’s world, the rapid pace of life, advancing technology, and growing personal demands have created high levels of stress and exhaustion, which often contribute to poor sleep hygiene. March is designated Sleep Awareness month, a time to explore the connection between sleep and wellness. At the adults-only Sensei Lanai, A Four Seasons Resort, guests can disconnect, restore balance, and leave with practical strategies and actionable steps they can implement at home - allowing them to better navigate daily stress and maintain a sense of well-being long after their personalized stay.
At the core of everything, Sensei prioritizes research and data in everything it does. Guides and practitioners take the time to understand each guest’s unique lifestyle, responsibilities, and sleep challenges - whether it's adjusting to new parenthood, navigating menopause, or recovering from the disruptions of travel. As part of the Rest and Reset Program, Sensei utilizes the latest wearable technology and other biometric devices to capture historical and real-time data to understand a guest’s sleep and recovery habits pre-arrival and from the moment they arrive on property. During the guest’s stay, their dedicated Sensei Guide will help interpret those key biomarkers of rest and recovery, including sleep quality, heart rate variability, and heart rate recovery, to help distil the data in a digestible way for the guest and come up with a plan of action to meet their goals.
Sensei Guides and practitioners couple tech and data-led experiences with more traditional wellness amenities including mindful movement sessions, restorative spa treatments, and more to create a motivational and comfortable environment for guests to achieve their goals aligned with Sensei’s philosophy of “Move, Nourish, Rest.” Sensei’s Wellness Science division uses 85 peer-reviewed research articles and publications to inform in-depth training. From sleep behaviour and duration to circadian rhythms and disordered sleep to the impact of exercise, nutrition, caffeine, alcohol and stress, the team has distilled pertinent and high-quality research into evidence-based techniques that on-site Guides can personalize to each guest.
Personalized wellness sessions are designed to develop practices that can be explored, then continued, once home. A Sleep 1:1 private session is a chance to review daily routines and behaviours to improve overall sleep quality, whether that involves wind down techniques for the evening or optimizing one’s sleep environment (minimizing distractions, lighting, temperature, etc.).
One’s environment (both internal and external) might be one of the most directly impactful components of sleep, and guests can trial new techniques at the Resort. Learn about the arc of the day to discover how tactics and habits during one’s daily cycle can lead to improved rest. From discovering sleep supportive cues in the bedroom, such as light switch settings that allow for neuro-ocular modulation, signalling an upcoming bedtime to the brain to participating in morning movement classes to trigger a later sleep response later or a meditation session to find deep relaxation as the day comes to a close.
A Mindset session can help guests identify thought patterns, learn strategies to better manage, stress, and deepen mental resilience, contributing to a calmer state of mind, while a Nutrition session can explore how food choices and eating times can impact energy levels and overall sleep quality.
While each guest receives personalized tips there are consistent sleep themes raised, including optimal wake time; optimizing schedules and sleep environments; practices to fall asleep; sleep regimen, and the arch of the day for better sleep.
While research suggests habit formation is unique for individuals, approximately 20-30 days of daily practice is often recognized for seeing change. Guests can book a My Progress virtual session with their Guide after their visit to evaluate and assess practices they have carried home, and the Rest & Recovery Program includes two virtual sessions within the package. For example, one guest reported a “profound change in restfulness both during sleep and through stressful times” by setting a regular wake-time and doing five minutes of breathing first thing every morning. Another guest found a 10-minute journaling exercise each night delivered more high quality sleep, including less waking throughout the night.
For those just beginning to explore the topic, Dream On: Navigating the Challenges of Sleep is a 30-minute group session, part of the complimentary weekly class schedule. Guests engage in a short questionnaire and open conversation about potential sleep obstacles from morning and evening routines to circadian rhythms, as well as various tools to improve the quality and quantity of sleep.
