The Star of the North: Riva Terrace, the Mediterranean Oceanfront Resort

Minneapolis, USA

With sprawling views of downtown Minneapolis, Riva, the rooftop bar and restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis, isn’t exactly a Riviera seaside eatery. But thanks to well-appointed design details — not to mention the shimmering pool, breezy al fresco Italian cuisine and refreshing cocktails — settling into Riva’s bar, lounge or dining area is the closest you can get to bright Mediterranean vibes without pulling out your passport.

A Perfect Palette

The rooftop’s colour scheme starts with poppy, bright colours reminiscent of the vintage Mediterranean resorts and eateries Mr. Ripley would love. Melon and terracotta hues blend with soft white and the occasional stripe accent, and in the lounge area, olive green couches — covered in outdoor velvet — are a perfect place to settle in with family and friends. Whether poolside, or at the bar, dining space or lounge, the energizing palette provides an ideal backdrop for sipping aperitivos and sampling light, flavourful food from Executive Chef Martín Morelli.

Resort Chic
Seaside and nautical elements are incorporated into the restaurant’s clean lines and minimalist vibe, from chairs wrapped in rope to waves on menu edges designed to evoke water in motion. Complementing bronze accents and brass fixtures, small details emphasize the feel of a classic Mediterranean oceanfront resort. Check presenters combine two vintage elements — amber glass ashtrays and classic metal bill holders — in one plexiglass circle. Local art is represented at Riva as well, with a stunning white sculpture by Dennis Kalow.

No Such Thing as Bad Weather

While Riva’s ambiance reads Mediterranean, the seasonal weather changes are distinctly Minnesotan. Enter outdoor heaters, a snow melt system and heating at the bar. With these warming elements and the warmth of our staff, visitors to Four Seasons Hotel Minneapolis can take in the local tradition of spending time outdoors no matter the weather.
