Autumn and Winter Discoveries in Kyoto

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto is situated in the atmospheric neighbourhood of Higashiyama, home to many of Kyoto’s most celebrated sights. Come November, the ancient capital comes alive with vivid autumn hues – gold and crimson, amber and burgundy. It’s the perfect time to soak in leafy landscapes, from the enchanting setting of Four Seasons very own 12th-century Shakusui-en pond garden to the spectacular Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Chishaku-in Temple, easily accessible on foot. Just a 10-minute drive away lies another famous sight: the gardens of Shogun-zuka Seiryuden, perched atop Higashiyama mountain and home to 220 crimson-leaved maple trees.

As autumn turns to winter, new discoveries await. Twinkling illuminations light up historical temples, quaint bridges and bamboo forests, while delicate ume (plum) blossoms swathe the streets in snow white and dazzling pink. Warming delicacies open a window into the city’s cherished culinary traditions. Savour steamed sushi, invented in Kyoto; mochi, a dainty rice specialty favoured during festivities; and kaburamushi, a fragrant composition of turnip, lily root, gingko and mushrooms atop white fish – locals liken its appearance to a melting snowball.

Travellers can partake in beloved winter rituals such as ofuro hot baths at Four Seasons, and onsen hot baths amid forested mountains in nearby Kurama or Arashiyama. The Concierge can also arrange seasonal excursions to sake breweries, local winter festivals, and rare art exhibitions in temples.

Seasonal Splendours of Tokyo

Rediscover the intriguing capital of Japan with a bevy of exciting experiences through autumn and winter. Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi offers next-generation sanctuary in the sky, overlooking spectacular views of the Imperial Palace Gardens and iconic cityscapes, while Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi provides an urban retreat nestled in the vibrant heart of Tokyo, with all the stylish delights of Ginza just next door and just footsteps from Tokyo Station.

Home to an astounding 203 Michelin-starred restaurants, Tokyo holds the title of Michelin capital of the world. Epicures can wine and dine their way across this culinary paradise, including seasonal menus and festive dining experiences at SÉZANNE (#17 of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants and #82 of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants) and est (one Michelin star) at Four Seasons.

Tokyo offers an exciting nightlife to rival any of the great cities of the world. Savour customized drinks at Ginza’s menu-less bars, or sip creative cocktails at drinking destinations ranked among the World’s 50 Best Bars. Don’t forget to sample a micro-seasonal cocktail at VIRTÙ, the Paris-meets-Tokyo bar at Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi. For access to locals-only spots or secret speakeasys, ask the Four Seasons concierge.

Autumn brings a glorious vibrancy to the city’s beautifully landscaped parks and gardens, many of which are easily reachable on foot or via a short subway ride from either Hotel. Witness the picturesque fall foliage of the East Imperial Gardens, visit a 500-year-old ginkgo tree at the serene Hibiya Park, and stroll through an enchanting golden tunnel at the tree-lined Jingu Gaien Avenue.

The arrival of winter transforms Tokyo into a sparkling wonderland, filled with fairy-tale illuminations and festive markets. Head to Tokyo Dome City to stroll down the champagne gold walkway to Meets Port Garden, or take in the modern purple-and-silver decorations at Roppongi Hills.

Four Seasons also makes the perfect base for winter adventures around Tokyo. Hit the slopes with a day trip to ski-town Karuizawa, go skating at a 1920s customs inspection house in Yokohama, or witness Japanese macaques enjoying hot baths in their natural habitat in Nagano.
